Gas Barbecues

I've long moved over to gas barbecues. This on the basis that food is cooked in it's own juices regardless of the heat source. But the problem is, what do you do when the gas canister is getting near empty?

You can buy an expensive thing to put on the side of your canister to tell you when it's getting near empty, BUT I think the best idea is to buy a second (smaller) canister as a back up. Whem your main canister runs out, simply plug in the back up! You can then carry on cooking. You then have time to go and get a refill on your main canister. But carry on using the back up until it's dead so you don't waste any gas.

If you think about it, you are wasting lots of money by taking back your gas canister because you think it's nearly empty. It wont take long to recoup the extra cost and you asre alweays guaranteed not to run out of gas when you are having that important BBQ party.

This is is a problem I have been having although last summer for the first time I went to my local garage owner who sells the gas. He noticed there was some gas left in my old bottle (but I was not sure it was enough to do a BBQ with and did not really want to fork out for another bottle and gas) and he was kind enough to offer me the loan of another gas bottle (I paid just for the gas in it) and said I could return the original bottle when it was completely empty. He just took my name and phone number which I thought was very trusting of him (I did return the bottle by the way!). However, I have today been trying to find a store which stocks the measure thing you mention. Do you happen to know who sells them please (and roughly how much they are).

You could weigh the bottle. (The empty weight of the bottle is usually on the neck( Tare)) or do as I did and bought a spare bottle
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • I save the most money by cooking the food in the kitchen then taking it outside. Avoids all the cost and problems of BBQ's plus I don't have to store the bloody thing during winter ;-)

I'm a bit of a tight bottomed person - was hoping to avoid paying out another £40-50 for the bottle but spose I will have to in the end.

I was in Homebase at the weekend where there was a poster advertising `new` BBQ gas bottles with a fuel guage of some sort.
Didnt look too closely as I still prefer fiddling with about with proper fires and cooking on charcoal.

If you go to your nearest tip (Recycling center) you might be able to pick one up there.

There are usually a few left there.

I totally agree, we brought a gas barbecue back with us from the US before they became popular and I have to say we only used it about six times and gave it to my parents. It is still in use but I am afraid I much prefer an authentic barbi. Brick built and coals all the way for me I am afraid.
    £2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

There is no need to buy an expensive device to see how much gas you have left.
If you go to the accessories shop of most caravan dealers you will be able to find a cheap attachment for the gas bottle.

Or get one of these new transparent cylinders where you can see how much is left.
