Following up on job applications??

Any system that allows you to apply on line can easily be set up to send out automated rejection letters (or for you to amend them). I have templates in our system which allow me to reject at CV sift, after telephone interview, after face to face interview and after assessment centre. The initial ones simply give 'other more suitable candidates' as a reason, which is the sifting criteria at this stage. Later ones offer feedback on request. Given that all I have to do is check boxes next to the affected candidates and confirm that I want the email sent out, it's not that onerous!

I get REALLY irritated by recruiters who hassle you for information in order to put your name forward for a role, tell you that they'll get back to you and never do. I keep these details on file to remind me a. not to use them to get jobs if I can find a way round it and b. not to use them to recruit for me if they're going to treat my candidates this way!

You sound like a really lovely, thoughtful employer...I wish there were more like you!

OP -did you ever hear back about the job??

  • I've often wondered why, when most of the applications I send out are able to send me a 'thank you for your application' e-mail when they get it, why they then can't send me an e-mail saying 'thanks but no thanks'. I assume they're keeping everyone's applications on file in a database somewhere so surely they can generate an e-mail with your name in from that? Even 'Dear applicant' wouldn't bother me, I'd just like to know is all.

Good luck for your interview loisa!

Just a bit of an update. I didn't follow up the application in the end, I had decided it probably wasn't worth it and was unable to get on the internet to send the email anyway.
And then they call me up today!!!
It was completely unexpected. They had told me when I applied that the interviews would probably be taking place in the week just gone.

That will teach me to be so flippin cynical! But I just had a feeling about this job, which was why I was moaning so much in the first place!

This week I also received a 'no thanks' letter for a different job that I applied for a couple of months ago. I guess it can all just take a bit longer than expected to shortlist and get back to everyone. I will not be so impatient in future!

I really hope this interview goes well. Unfortunately, since I applied for that job I had given up on finding work around here and decided to relocate! I would still be able to get to that job but it will take a lot longer.
Oh well, I haven't got it yet so I probably shouldn't be worrying about that just yet!

Lol, that'll teach me to skip to the end and not check that the OP has updated the thread. Good luck with the interview, fingers and toes crossed for you!!

As for worrying about the travelling time before getting the job, I've an interview next week for an admin job (hoping the economy will pick up and I can go back to my previous sector in time) and I'm already worried about the fact they've to wear orange blouses!!! :rotfl:

  • I would recommend whenever possible calling the employer/agent a day or 2 after making your application.

I do this for all my applications now. The first time I did it, the agent told me that I had been rejected because I had not worked on a particular type of product. When I told them that I had, I was put through to the next stage. There was no mention of this on the job advert so it was a small point that nearly cost me. It wasn't on my CV as I didn't see it as relevant. Contacting the employer is a quick way to ensure that you don't get rejected for reasons that aren't true.

Well said - a typical example is my local council when applying for vacancies. They e mail you to say ,
    1) thanks for applying application form attached
    2) Then they e mail and say thanks in receipt of your application when you have completed it, but for some reason cannot be courteous enough to e mail you when your application is rejected.

I suggested that I do not need my application acknowledged but would rather be advised of the eventual outcome in future applications. I am still
waiting for a response but will not hold my breath
