How things change...

Apologies for what is likely to be a lengthy post! I've been posting recently about an IVA that HMRC has refused. Ohh how things can change so quickly :) I am (as of yesterday) out of work which now leaves me with some more things to consider! Basically, I'm now 100% convinced I should declare BR.

My partner has recently taken voluntary redundancy and will receive her payout in early September. She is currently working her notice period. Once she has left she intends to enter full-time education, but essentially she will have negligible earnings. Her payout will erase the majority of her debts and support her in education for 2 years (with a part time job) but basically her net contribution to household income will be zero.

My circumstances are far from simple (are they ever) but I have a few questions that I hope some of you can help me with. I am/was self-employed in the IT industry and require computing equipment as part of my work. As a result I am assuming that these assets (they are personal, not company assets) will be exempt. I am also trying to start up a photography business (have paid for website, editing/printing equipment, etc) and am also assuming my photography equipment will be exempt for the same reason. I am yet to make any earnings from the photography as it is fledgling in nature, will this impact the exempt status of the assets in the OR's mind?

I am also required to lose weight for an operation (giving my kidney to my partner who is in late stage kidney failure with her first donated kidney) and so have gym membership and a weekly session with a personal trainer to advise and instruct the best way for me to lose weight quickly and safely. My weight is also a health risk for myself. Will the OR sympathise with my situation and find this an acceptable cost on SOA on health grounds?

I'm pretty sure I can find work that will pay our basic living expenses, even in this climate, but the above are my current concerns.

I'm sure I will have lots more questions but I think those are sufficient to be going on with :)

Hi Liquid, I'm sorry I can't help with much else but I know that you can get a prescription from your GP for exercise. I think the scheme is called Exercise On Prescription. I'm sure you'd be eligible for it as you've a need to lose weight so you can donate the kidney.
It works by the GP giving you a prescription, you pay for the prescription (if you need to) and take it to any local health centre/gym/local authority owned place and they let you in for free. I know it's not a personal trainer, but maybe you could go to your personal trainer a few more times and write down all the exercises he's been teaching you afterwards, and get yourself a plan together to follow when the time comes that you go on the prescription exercise? I doubt the OR would allow something like a gym membership and personal trainer on your SOA.:o
I'm not lazy; I'm simply good at delegating.

For this to continue you would need all medical proof you could have to support your case BUT this would only stretch to basic Gym membership they would probably decline personal trainer etc
