It might be worth asking on the reclaiming bank charges forum. I don't know if reclaiming would mean that the bank would delete information about their having been charges or would just repay the money but the previous info remains. Worthwhile checking though.

I'm by no means an expert on this (or anything for that matter) but I have to say I don't think it will make a difference if the bank charges are reclaimed. The charges have been made because you exceeded your limit (presumably) and the mortgage provider is likely to view this as poor account management.

I can see their point, if someone has shown that they are incapable of keeping their bank account in order why would the want to risk 10s of thousands. They would probably open themselves up to a miss selling claim.
  • At what point did RBS decline the application? I'm already at the point where a valuation has been booked and am now worried.

i understand the point of them risking the miss selling but going overdrawn by a couple of pound is quite harsh.my fault totally but lack of common sense.does anyone know much about abbey mortgages?

We had to send off our bank statements (single and joint) with our application for first direct and I assumed this was normal for all banks. They did scrutinise them and rang us asking questions about them eg. confirming that the regular standing order was rent that would not continue once we had a mortgage and asking about larger amounts of money that had been transferred through current accounts (we'd been moving all our savings about).

Going over your overdraft and incurring charges in the eyes of an underwriter indicates that the client is not living within means and so that makes them twitchy. So reclaiming bank charges doesn't make any difference.

Maybe you should go and see a fee-free Mortgage adviser seeing as your circumstances are a bit complicated? They should be able to find you the best deal that suits your situation and it saves you going through this whole process of second-guessing all the banks and damaging your credit rating in the process (with multiple checks).
