I've today received a letter (in my maiden name which I haven't used for 12 years) from a company called Aktiv Kapitol asking if I am the person they're looking for and could I contact them.
Do I contact them or ignore? Are they a company trying their luck.

As you know they are debt collectors.
They either have the wrong person and have mis-traced to you, or if it is your debt then it is likely to be "statute barred" and legally unenforceable after all that time.
Either way, just ignore them until you receive something definite rather than this vague "fishing" letter.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
