How long should I keep bank statements?

Hi all, This answer is probably somewhere but i've done a quick search and couldn't find the answer. :confused: I'm sorting through all my paperwork tonight, having a mini spring clean if you like! and just wanted to know how long should I hold on to bank statements for? Thanks x

I've got all mine for at least 5 years. I'm on benefits and never know when they'll ask to see them, so I daren't get rid of any. I'll probably keep ones that are under 6 years when it gets that far. My online banking only shows a couple of months too, which is a bit annoying.
