Cutting a long story short...

Was contacted recently (6 months ago) about a statute barred debt to HSBC (Was statute barred 3 years ago). Sent them a letter, and that (I thought) was that.

They then sold account to 1st Credit, who contacted me about the same thing. Sent them another letter and they said it would be dealt with.

So far I've heard nothing for months about it.

So, I sign up for an Equifax credit report today and to my horror, I've been credit searched DOZENS of times in the last 18 months, two of them were TODAY!!

Are they doing this to spite me because they couldn't get their pound of flesh?? The more searches on your file, the more damage it does etc...

I've been trying for years to put my credit file right, but have been making slow progress, even though the report is full of green zero's now I'm finding it difficult to get any kind of mainstream banking facilities such as a chequebook, credit card etc.

How can I put this right? Can I ask the collection agencies to remove all the searches, as they can't seem to be legitimate searches now?? Can Equifax deal with it for me?

I know MacKenzie Hall get a bad rap, but now I know first hand why!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

These are likely to be enquires rather then searches, so should not have an impact.

I think it takes 6yrs to clear your credit report. Don`t quote me on it though.
One thing i`m confused about is why are they searching.... x

Blimey - that bump took a long time to get a reply.

I would contact experian or equifax to look at whether they are hard footprint or soft footprint searches.

The Hard footprint ones are the ones that creditors see when they do a credit check and can see who else has done them.

Soft footprint ones are to let you see companies that have checked your details - addresses etc. Lenders will not be able to see these searches.

    From the Experian site:
How do I know who has seen information about me?
Whenever someone accesses or searches your information on the Experian database , a search record, or 'footprint', is created. These records show which company has accessed/searched your personal information and when, and are kept on record for one year.

Search records are kept for your information and to assist lenders when processing credit applications. They also help prevent Fraud. Unrecorded Enquiries reflect that someone has looked at your report, but that fact will not be revealed to other lenders - the record is kept so you know who has accessed your credit report.

As it was not an application for credit, they will be shown as unrecorded searches - which means only you and the company will see this entry and not another lender.

It should not impact your ability to obtain credit.

When I checked Equifax, there are two boxes for searches... one of them is the unrecorded searches, ref: ID checks, and the like. The other clearly states that lenders can see the information, and these shower of sh*ts have plastered all over it. Numerous times for the same thing....

I would definately contact the credit reference agency to confirm this before taking it further. If they have done a full credit check on you, they require your permission to do so. If they do not have this i would write to them stating that you will make a complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office.
