PhD student salary

I've just called the Halifax and been told that the money I earn from my post as a PhD student may not count in their eyes if it's classed as a bursary. Has anyone experienced this before? I never thought that it would be a problem. I get a payslip at the end of every month from my university so always thought of it as a wage as it never changes month to month.

It won't count. You'll have to wait until your PhD is done and you have a real job. It's a stipend, not a salary.Kavanne

Hi there Tyros, we had this problem when my OH was doing his PhD. Even including his part-time job (he lectured a few hours a week) they wouldn't give him a mortgage
. We ended up as first time buyers looking for a 3 bed house, luckily as he got a job in the same uni lecturing, he was employed before he had his Viva and we bought soon after that.
This was 8 years ago, and before the credit crunch, so I suspect you've got little chance now, sorry. I will agree with you though, it's hard work - I hardly saw my OH in the final 6 months when he was writing up, but it's worth it.
It's only a game
