My closest butcher is a 3 mile round trip. I've no idea what he's like, but when I've glanced in on passing there's never a customer in there - so doesn't exactly fill me with confidence for trying him
Closet farm shop - no idea. Almost non-existant around me. And those I've passed in the car don't have any boards outside for meat - just potatoes, fruit & veg, milk and cream.
Closest supermarket - 5 minute walk each way.

So I'm afraid meat for us is supermarket only, with no other realistic option. (Plus I get a lot of it on Whoopsie, which I've never seen in a butcher shop)
Have you tried the butchers at the bottom of astley street on the way to walkden?
Or the new morrisons butchers are good

Was it only me who thought the BBQ chicken leg the child was eating in the starting sequence looked very 'pink' in the middle?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

    OATS?? In basic braised mince?

    Tell me more....

You can bulk out mince with oats. Works in most dishes, makes the meat go further, reduces the fat content of the meal. Or you can use lentils, or grated carrot, or breadcrumbs. There's a thread on bulking out meals at http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=170476&highlight=bulking

Confused as to which you mean. If this refers to the one on the Manchester side of Tyldesley Square, they closed down with no warning 2+ years ago :(

I bulk my (cheap) mince with reconsituted soya mince. Tried green lentils, but came very close to DS working that one out (apparently some of the "peas" tasted funny ;) ) Since I started using the soya he's not even hinted he thinks I'm up to any tricks - and this is the 'child' (he's 18) who claims to hate all things soya, and states he can spot me using it at 100 paces ;)

But it does mean I have to try and get all mince well on the way while he's at college or out walking the dog :rolleyes2

  • I enjoyed the programme very much. We have to bear in mind that there are a lot of "ordinary mortals" out there who can't/won't cook meals and exist on microwave ready meals and takeaways. I would say that many of us on this site who cook real food do so because our financial situations forced us to look long and hard at where our limited incomes go. I am still amazed that someone could give a nine year old kid a microwaved mac cheese 3 times a week for his main meal, and a donkey kebab once a week! .

I'm not sure I do agree with that- yes admittedly if I had £220 a week to spend on food I might not bulk out mince with lentils, (or maybe I still would ;)) but I would never dream of feeding children nasty processed ready meals several times a week, let alone doner kebabs! :confused:I suppose I could afford ready meals every night if I wanted, but I would hate to put such a load of rubbish into my body and would cook real food whether I was a millionaire or a pauper.

For me, it was the fact they spent so much money and it was on junk that was the most shocking!

If you read the recipe through for the Hotdog hotpot on the BBC website she actually uses Frankfurters not hotdogs

The hotdog thing didn't apeal to me either...and regarding Allegra usually choosing decent food, I think that that family was that used to eating 'junk' that the chefs were trying to obtain a sort of middle ground. Rather than just getting them to go cold turkey and cut out all fatty/quicky/unhealthy food..as it is likely they would crave it and give up on the new way of eating....They obviously thought that even one or two nights of fried/junk food would be a vast improvement on their current diets:)
