mountain bike

Hi. Can anyone advise on best size bike for a 6ft 2" male who gets aching shoulders riding a standard size bike? Alternatively retailers where can he try a bike before buying or get good honest advice before buying?
Suggestions and advice will be helpful.
Thanks
Vegi.

Any good mountain bike seller worth their salt will let you try before you buy so well worth a test run. Avoid the big stores halfords etc...

At 6ft 2 a 19 inch frame should be fine - I'm a similar size. The position of the seat and bars will help with any back ache.

Many thanks. I shall take your advice together with details on the thread recommended by Slowden. I shall probably do the same as georgiac and spend a lot more than intended. Seems this is an instance where spending more will be cheaper and healthier in the long term. Will post our purchase decision to let you know outcome.

Thanks Ade. The site looks promising. Co. is mail order only and I can't find any retail shop stockist for Sedona. I do need to check out/test run bikes before making final decision. Any idea how I can find localish stockist of these bikes? Aslo which Bike did you get?

It's definitely worth trying bikes out first. It's not just about the height, thinking about it logically, it's more about inside leg and arm length. Different bike use different geometry so its worth trying a number of brands...

I agree with you evil monkey. The only bike shop in my town is Raliegh. The Raleigh "comfort" mountain bikes may be suitable but they go up to 20" frame and shop did not have this size in stock. They would not get one in unless my OH definately wanted one. We decided to look elsewhere at other "comfort bikes". Still searching, in vain, on google to find retail shop. Perhaps I'm not inputting a good enough heading title?

Thank you to everyone who posted advice. It was all very helpful. We did find a shop that let us try out bikes. We decided the raleigh comfort bike was most suitable for us. We have not saved money as ended up with a bike for OH and one for myself. Buying two we did get a reasonable discount and the bikes are great. Cycled 10 miles along coastal tow path yesterday , Pain free, enjoyable exercise, well worth the outlay. :j
