Just to clarify this for you OP (although it has been mentioned) the first £6475 of your TOTAL ANNUAL EARNINGS are tax free (if your tax code is 647L). Over and above that you start paying tax...
but it's split over the year. If, at the end of the year you have overpaid tax (for instance if you stopped working after 4 months having earned an annual salary of £12K) then you would get a refund.

Incidentally your tax code isn't an emergency one if it's 647L!

The emergency code for this year is 647L from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/emergency-code.htm
"The emergency tax code is set each year and is a number followed by the letter L. The number is the basic Personal Allowance (£6,475 for the tax 2009-10) divided by 10. The emergency code for 2009-10 is therefore 647L."

Just in case someone else has not said it further up; the first day of the tax year is April 6th.
[This used to be 25th of March, when the angel told the virgin she was expecting a happy event as an unmarried mother on census day - however the Romans did not get the Julian calendar quite right so all other dates in the farming calender had to be changed BUT the tax man was not going to give the tax payers a holiday - nothing changes.]
