Can't set up router

Options
Hello all,
I'm currently on dial-up for internet but my Nildram account starts tomorrow(18th April).
I have recieved a Netgear DG834G wireless modem router from them and I have a Netgear WG511 wireless card.I can't connect to the router using the Ethernet wire as I only have a laptop and that doesn't have the necessary port so my only option is wireless.
I have connected the router up to the phone line through the dual splitter.I have installed the card on my laptop but am unable to establish a wireless connection to the router.
Is it only possible to set up the router using the ethernet wire and then get a wireless connection? Also do I need to wait until my broadband account starts to be able to do this?I'm getting a wee bit confused here and would appreciate any advice.
Many thanks

are you sure the laptop doesn't have an ethernet ports, it's unusual nowadays not to have one. Do you have any friends and family with a PC to borrow?

If the wireless light is on the router, you may be able to connect to it, switch it on, the PC should find a netgear unsecured wireless network, connect to it, then go into internet explorer, http://192.168.0.1 admin password..

this is how to secure it when you get it going, but is very difficult without a wired connection

you wont be able to establish a wireless connection on a new out of the box router without prevously configuring it on a wired connection.

you can configure it before your connetion is active but it wont work for internet access untill your connection is active

Are you sure about that? I thought that when the Router is switched on for the first time it will broadcast a signal using the default SSID and exist as an unsecured network. This allows the consumer to make a maiden login and configure it, secure it wirelessly.

My Netgear wireless router came with the wireless option off as default. I would guess that yours is the same.

Albertross, I'm afraid my laptop is quite old(nearly 6 years old now) but I'm getting a new desktop delivered this Thursday so will be able to connect using the wire then.I just find it strange that you cant establish a wireless connection without previously configuring it on a wired connection.

Jem16, Did you use a wired connection then to switch the wireless option on?

Yes I used a direct wired connection from my latop to the router.

if the wireless icon is lit on the router, you probably can .. it's the one that looks like a mosquito/lollipop/axe.. (next to the 1)

the problem is that as soon as you change the config to setup security etc, it will break the connection.

Ah ok I connected wireless out of the box with mine, it's a Linksys. Seems Netgear have a different default.

Had DG834GT which has wireless OFF by default when I first set it up. You really need a wired connection to the router.
