Well went today to take my SOA...he wasnt interested in the things i already knew about BR from here, and wasnt interested in my SOA from the makesenseofcards i did for 'myself' as i took this along, all he kept going on about was he wanted SOA for both of us, and debts for both of us....this leaves us about £400 left if thats how its done, and he kept going on about BR being the last resort and if you can pay x amount per week, gave the example of £1 why would i want to go BR...he said nobody can claim more if thats whats decided and if they try to just show them the SOA they will have set out for me:mad:
Most of the debt apart from one loan, and £700 on a CC are not mine, the other 23K is mine, so makes sense to just get rid and start life afresh.
Anyway, he is sending the sao to finance dept and they will make me an appointment in a couple of weeks.
Does this all sound normal for starting out with CAB???
I dont want to be paying for years and years...infact my DD has now decided she isnt going to college in sept so money will go down even more:eek:

hi, they can only give their advice, you do not have to take their advice and it doesn't seem like the guy knew a lot about it really! if you did pay £1 per month or week, it would take decades to clear 23k of debt and you probably wouldn't clear it even then because some companies will still be adding interest and charges. And I don't believe it is good for your physical or mental health to have that hanging over your head until you are an OAP.
Stick with this forum and the advice here and maybe speaking with National Debtline or CCCs for another opinion.
Best wishes xxxBSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
You've sought advice, you understand the implications of BR, you don't need to go back to CAB for their 'permission' to go BR. You can take control of your situation yourself now.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

After getting not much useful from the charities I did a search on google and called a local Insolvency Practitioner. He was very helpful, gave me lots of good, free advice and didn't try to push me to and IVA or something else he could charge for.0

Thanks for the advice guys, he just wasnt a peron who would let you explain anything, as i think his job is to just get the initial SOA, then its the job of the next person to advice....i am a bit gobsmacked at the minute as just opened a gas/electric bill and its almost £600 i cant understand why/how we use so much electric and gas, we havnt even had the heating on for months:mad:
I will give it a couple of weeks, see what the other person says then i will consider ging it alone with the BR.
I tried to explain i got my info on here, and all i got was how do you know its correct...told him it was real people who had been or going BR, and got, but how do you know they are/have...i felt a bit like a naughty child to be honest.0 -

Well that wasn't much use to you was it.
He has started right at the begining of the debt advice process and not took in to account the fact that you have already looked at the other options. It is the normal initial debt advice process to take a couples income in to account when looking at options but then needs to be broken down further as the financial picture becomes clearer.
Training need I think.
At least you have been reffered to the debt team.
If you go to the appointment in two weeks I hope that your experience will be completely different and more appropriate for you.Debt Doctor, Debt caseworker, Citizens' Advice Bureau .

Thankyou, although i felt he wasnt letting me speak i understood he is the first port of call and he gets the initial info, i just wanted him to make whoever he sent the info to aware i had looked into BR and i felt that was the better option than having years upon years of crediters on my back.
I explained how we were a little warey incase anyone came to the door....'and why should they was his reply, they cannot do anything to you, and if they do just show them the income expenditure form we will set out for you, theres nothing they can do'
I said i have kids who could open the door, unwittingly letting someone in...'and why should they was his reply, even if a policeman came to the door he shouldnt just come in'
Geeze this made me a bit annoyed as kids cant stop anyone brushing past them, i know irs to early to worry about bailiffs or doorstep collectors, but its still a worry, anyway i will see what the nexp app brings, and take it from there.
Thankyou all once again0 -
Sometimes you just get the one that doesn't know very much I guess.
I'd call national debtline or CCCS or do the CCCS online debt remedy thing and then just go BR if you have already decided that option is for you.Look down your nose at me and I thumb my nose back at you.

When I went to the CAB the advisor didn't even look at my SOA, he basically looked at my debts, how much I earned. He went through the options but said his opinion was BR. that was the one option I hadn't considered. I asked questions (probably repeating myself a few times in the appointment) and answered my scenarios, etc. I think you must have got a "wrong 'un" as my CAB advisor listened and advised, not be dismissive of me.0
