A P60 is prepared by your employer. I suppose you could ask for the original, but I'm not sure what difference it would make. P60's are only usually useful if you have to preapre a tax return and even then you only need write PAYE on the form if that's how you pay tax.

Instead of getting mad about this, just ask them calmly why. You may just be happy with the answer.

I would suspect, that over the years a number of employees have mislaid theirs and then needed it for something and expected the company to be able to produce it for them, which of course they can't. By keeping the originals, if this happens they can produce it so in effect they have them in safe keeping. I know our accounts department gets fed up with people wanting copies of previous years P60's and doubly fed up with employees who don't accept that they cannot produce another original copy.

If you feel that strongly about it, insist they give you the original but if you then lose it you will not be able to get another one.
  • i dont care to be honest but its just the cheek, we had to sign a form saying we had recived it and then its a photo copy  i just dont understand it, its like we are back at school

I believe it has to be the original. The taxman will not accept a photocopy of your P60 if you claim tax back. If you lose it, your employer must issue you a new one with duplicate stamped across it.

My employer told me that is not true and that they cannot issue another one if you lose it.

I would be really annoyed if they could have done as I wanted them so I could claim tax relief on preceding years for pension contributions. As it happened, I did find my originals but I was told there was nothing I could do if I had not.

To the OP, I would make a fuss about being asked to sign for a photocopy and ask for the original.

Edit: Just done some research and it appears that duplicates can now be issued but that this is a recent change. My payroll department were probably right at the time but I am glad I have this info now.
