£10,000 is not sad - it's positively brilliant!
I must say it's partly since we started 'popping for coffee' that I started losing control of my spending diary. How convenient, eh?
One way we control our spending on frivolous thing is that we both have 'pocket money' of £10 a week - I choose to save mine till I can afford something I really want but it's always there if I see something I can't justify spending the household money on. We haven't got a clothing budget as such but the rule is the 'house' pays for everyone's clothes and shoes, which isn't often as I begrudge unnecessary items, and we pay for things that are our hobbies and interests out of our own pocket money. The kids in turn get £5 each per week and they have to save for games etc but I buy their clothes etc or 'the house' does. Unfortunately for my bank balance, the coffees we sometimes pop out for are paid for by the house too...
This has been really useful as my husband gets comics on preorder and he has to budget for these himself, along with any stuff he gets on ebay. Before we had pocket money he would spend, spend, spend.
