Smelly glassware

Can anyone help? We have a problem with glassware. When they have been washed either by hand or dishwasher they smell okay. After they have been left out on the table for a while, (ie before putting a drink in them) they start to smell horrible - a bit like loads of wet dogs/seaweed (according to DH) together. The smell is so strong that they can't be used. On occasion before, it's been the actual water and you can smell it when the water is in the bowl. It only rarely affects crockery. TIA
