Pension is paid a week/4 week in arrears.

If you opt to be paid weekly then the payment is actually in advance. Better in my pocket than earning interest for the government!

Thanks for the replies. I have not received any letters telling me of how much I will be paid or when either.

if you have not had the letter then they are still trying to sort out how much you are entitled to. Divorce/widows cases are not always straight forward as "joe blogs cases", which is why they take longer but that should of been explained to you when you made your application.

Hi everyone, glad to see that I'm not the only one with a query about when I should actually receive my state pension. My birthday was 4 Sept and I opted to be paid every 4 weeks, but so far nothing in my bank account. I'm not in dire need of the money but can't help wondering what someone who was in real need of it would do if it wasn't paid on time.

I got the letter telling me what I'd be getting, etc. and IIRC (sorry, haven't it to hand) it said something about letting me know when my first payment would be made. I've heard nothing further from them, but just assumed the money would be in the bank by now.

Oh well, just have to wait, I suppose.
  • If your birthday was on the 4 Sept I should have thought you should have had it in your bank account by now even if it is paid in arrears.
I asked for mine weekly as I wanted it in my account rather than theirs, my birthday was on Sat 26 and it was in my account on Monday 28th.
I have now got to get my head around being a pensioner. I also have got my bus pass, but will have to get into the nearest town 4 miles away to be able to use it, but i will!
Now I am looking forward to the Winter Fuel Allowance.:D
I hope you receive your pension soon,
    Poppy

Your first payment if you opted for 4 weekly is either 2 - 6 weeks after you are due, this is because the payment has to be put in to a payment cycle, just give them a call and they should be able to figure out when it is due for release. The letter will be sent when payment is relased to your account.

Poppy, thank you for your reply. I'm not too concerned about the delay, just found it a little bit surprising. And like you, I find it really quite odd to think of myself as a pensioner; I still think I'm quite young. Mind you, my mother is 91 tomorrow so compared to her I am quite young! I have two older sisters and my mother is quite amused to find herself with three daughters who are all pensioners. :D

I have my bus/train pass too and intend making good use of it. It's a pity you have to make a journey of four miles to use yours, but definitely worth it. As for the winter fuel allowance, my husband already gets that so I don't think I'll get any extra (or so I've been told). Still, every little helps, and I'm going to enjoy being a pensioner and claiming anything I'm entitled to. I'm not really thrifty by nature, but have decided to turn over a new leaf and look after the pennies.

anmarj, thank you for your reply. I see what you mean about the payment cycle and I've had a look at the form they sent me originally and yes, it says the first payment could be for less or more than four weeks; it looks like mine may be more, since the four week period has passed. I should learn to read forms more carefully, but I was just interested in the amount they were giving me, rather than the details of payment. I'm happy enough to wait for another week or two, but if it doesn't turn up in my account by then I'll contact them. I wouldn't like to think they'd paid it into someone else's account by mistake!

ETA - anmarj, I almost forgot to wish you good luck for 17 October and every happiness in your marriage. Have a wonderful day!
