RBS/Nwest -anyone opened one post bankruptcy

I am interested in the policy of the two banks above, I know they are the same group. The other night I thought I would apply for the Key account with RBS. My brief history I am now over 5 years discharged and a few months to go before the BK drops off my files.

I have had an account with Yorkshire Bank, a readycash account with a Maestro card, full internet banking. But they are miles away and would need a bank closer.

Last year I tried for a basic with LTSB and Abbey both declined.
Anyway, last night on the RBS account I filled in a few questions, then it asked 'have you ever been declared bankrupt' so I pulled out of the application. So can I ask as anyone actually opened an account with either RBS or Natwest post bankruptcy. Given that they do ask that question?

My other thoughts, say you could have gone bankrupt 25 years ago, would that still be a no-no with these banks?

Any thoughts please:rolleyes:

Hi Bosie, Just read you post and thought i would tell you my story.

I have to close my RBS account when I started an IVA. I opened an account online with Natwest - (Step account i think it is called ) and had no problems. I can't remember if they asked the BR question though.

the account although basic - no overdraft or cheque book, gives you a debit card and online banking.

Hope that is of some help to you

Thanks for that, were RBS part of the IVA? sorry to be nosey, also is the IVA on your credit files?

Natwest do not do a credit search for their basic Step Account. However, they do ask if you have ever been declared BR. In branch, the next screen asks if you have been discharged and asks for proof so you should be ok if you apply in branch.

The Step Account only comes with a Solo card at present. I believe RBS and Natwest are moving over to Visa so presumably it will come with a Visa Debit card soon (as Electron is being withdrawn from the market).

    Bosie,

Ive just checked online and the application process on line is now different to how it was the other day. It now lets you apply directly for a key account.

Where as the other day you had to apply for a full current then if that failed they would automatically submit you for a key account.

So your application would get credit scored but if you apply now then you wouldnt as you applying for the key account product direct anyway.

Make a dummy application and see for your self very odd. If you tick the bankcrupty box this is the message youll get on the next screen:

Thank you for applying for the following product: CURRENT ACCOUNT
Unfortunately your application has been declined
    Bankruptcy

When we were processing your application we performed our standard searches, and found Bankruptcy information registered in your name. Unfortunately we're not able to open accounts where this is the case, until we see confirmation that the Bankruptcy Order has been officially discharged.

If you can supply us with confirmation that the Bankruptcy Order has been discharged, we will proceed with the application for a basic bank account. This confirmation can be obtained by contacting the Accountant in Bankruptcy (Scotland) and the appointed Trustee in Bankruptcy (England &Wales).

Please call into the Branch should you be in a position to supply this information as this may enable us to take your application forward.

Don't forget, for free impartial guidance about your money, you can always visit our Moneysense website at https://www.rbsmoneysense.co.uk, or visit one of our Moneysense advisers in branch.
As well as impartial guidance, our Moneysense site includes a budget planner, financial healthcheck and other useful tools.

So it looks like if you can prove you have been discharged you may be okay.

Hi again stclair! It seems though as DVS said if you go into a branch it does ask if you are discharged? after asking the bankruptcy question, maybe the online application doesn't?
I still have to get the original application removed from Equifax:o

Yes, my files seem basically ok apart from the BK, but that will be off in a few months altogether. If you look at my sig I have got quite a few accounts. I've got my knickers in a knot over RBS:D
