Economic mess daunting - Cameron

David Cameron has said the "scale of the economic mess" he would inherit if he became prime minister was "incredibly daunting".

Mr Cameron told the BBC he was "looking the British people in the eye" and saying public spending had to be cut.

Who would imagine it, a opposition politician saying what the people want to hear :D
What's amazing, is that the people apparently want to hear about cuts, Is the general population cleverer than people on HPC give them credit for, or do those that think different not bother voting?
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

The majority of the popoulation whether they read newspapers or watch the news on television. Has seen the impact of the current economic crisis. Even if its only their local pub closing or loss of a few high street shops.

Brown has the lost the confidence of the British people. Whilst Cameron is saying the right things. I'm not sure people understand the extent of the problems. We are in for a long upward grind, there isn't a quick 24 month fix.

As someone else said on another thread, Cameron has no more ideas how to fix things than Brown, so things should be interesting come the other side of the next election. Clueless. Looks like Daves panicking already, not a good sign.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Maybe but even the man in the street knows the books are in a mess  He must be prepared for the worst case surely. We are in a mess but Daves never really inspired me with confidence t b h. It's going to be a struggle.

In this kind of downturn and prospective loss of wealth for many people the country is essentially ungovernable. People will refuse to recognise the inevitable and I suspect it will be impossible to make the country recognise the need to live within its means whoever wins at the next election, until the reality of the gov't running out of money actually occurs. The way the crisis is handled at that point will show the true strength (or lack of it) of British society.

    I'm not sure that's true.

The idea most people have is if you stop the immigrants coming in and tinker round the edges (things that'll save a few million or even a billion here and there like stopping people suing the NHS) that it'll fix itself.

Unfortunately what is required is another Thatcher - someone who is prepared to say, 'We can't afford this and it has to stop now' and then actually stops the spending despite the political pain. I think Cameron won't be prepared to take the pain.

Many people loathe Thatcher for her policies despite there being no alternative except national bankruptcy. I got invited recently to join a 'celebration' in Trafalgar Square on the day that she dies. People want to dance on her grave 19 years after she left power!

The UK needs someone with economic intelligence, like Vince Cable.
    Not another Thatcher.
