Washing Machine - Independant engineer's report

My washing machine has broken down just outside of the 12 month warranty.

I've contacted the retailer and they've agreed to help as long as I get an engineer's report and this shows the fault to be a manufacturing defect.

The problem is the rear/outer plastic drum has broken which means the machine doesn't hold water.

The machine hasn't been overloaded and there wasn't anything in the machine to cause the breakage but before it broke it did seem a little noisier than it has been , possible bearing problem ?

Anyone know roughly how much the report is likely to cost and whether it would find in my favour?.

    A 'report' £99 apparently: http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/repairfaq.html

Sales of Goods Act 1979 as amended : Durability. Can't see why it shouldn't go your way, you'll be dealing with the shop and they'll know that a washing machine should last longer than 12 months.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
