At my college, various charity events are run every year, where a select group of students go to say china or india and help people there, raising hundreds if not thousands of pounds in the process.
These are *nothing* but glorified holidays, dressed up as 'charity missions' in order to persaude people to pay for them to have a holiday. The actual volunteering tends to be minimal, and these things are often ran by third parties who have to make a profit.
I can assure you that those in the rainforests will *not* listen to mere children about rainforest devestation - the only way to persuade these people is to provide them with a viable alternative. Educating them isn't enough - they need physical resources, and given that they have a large resource in the rainforest, the alternative is money.
Real biologists don't use volunteering companies. From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -

Wow.... someone's bitter.
I say go for it.
Real biologists would come up with a solution other than "give them money".0 -

I've actually been on a volunteering 'holiday' as you put it, and I did nothing but help the people the whole time I was there. It was run by my college, which is one of those colleges that get out of their way to give charity. And no as far as I'm aware it was not run by a third party.
Forget the rainforest, do you even know what volunteering is? You don't even need to talk, heck you would most probably wont even be able to seeing as it's a different country. Different things are run by different people, like teaching english to people in china, helping kids out, so it's pretty active.
And as i've said, unless you know what every single person that volunteers get up to, you wouldn't know what they 'tend' to do.
And what have biologists got to do with volunteering?0 -
In answer to Princess I couldnt have said it better, have you ever done one of these personally? Every single one will be different. Have you gone out there and given them these physical rescources you say they need? I highly doubt not so why dont you give the poor dude a break. They are trying to do something good!
Re earning money, Mystery Shopping? Have you tried that? Pays pretty reasonable at time's. Do you have any skills you can offer? Car washing? Teaching an instrument? Teaching the elderly how to use a computer?
Anything like that can sometimes earn a bit of extra money!0 -

If you want to volunteer then walk into town and offer to help at a charity shops. Go to a local church and help with kids activities or make tea for old people. Volunteering starts at home - local people giving back to their community.
Now there is nothing wrong with these trips if the person going pays for it all. It's a Busmans holiday - working abroad. It's a jolly - if you want to help kids then help them in your area, don't get people in your area to pay for you to fly to some third world country to help kids there.0 -

But I do all that anyway. I help elderly people back at nursing homes, I volunteer to read to kids at schools close to my college. Just because I didn't mention it, doesn't mean I don't. I volunteered abroad because it's something I've always wanted to do, and it'll also help with the career I have in mind.
What? I think you've either misunderstood me or thinking about something totally different. The college doesn't get people in the area to pay for us. We don't get sponsorships or stuff like that. Sometimes people from like say Gap also come over to the college to talk about their campaigns. It's a select group of students that the COLLEGE pays for, nobody else. It's not a very long stay, like 1-3 days max. I don't see the harm in it. And I don't see how it's a holiday or busman's holiday, if you're not doing the same things you do at work, and if it's not a leisure trip. We don't do shopping, we don't go around laughing and having fun. We're just there to help the people, be them kids or elderly.0 -

You're always gonna get people that will want to rain on your parade.... and you shouldn't feel the need to justify your choices to them. I think your efforts are admirable, and certainly more useful than spending 7 nights p*ssed out of your head in some grotty Club 18-30 resort in Aiya Napa!
As for upping your income, have a declutter and sell some of your old stuff on eBay/gumtree/etc. Also, being extremely thrifty with the money you already have will make a big difference: eat at home instead of going out, walk/cycle instead of catching the bus for short journies, etc.0 -

For some reason you keep mentioning you are a biologist, how exactly is this relevant? If you read the OP, there is mention of a dive trip, learning more about marine biology, which would look good on a UCAS application. This suggests that the OP has yet to embark on education in this area, and is using it as a once in a lifetime opportunity to do so. There is absolutely no suggesion that the OP is a biologist, ruining your obviously very high opinion of yourself and your profession.
Maybe some volunteering trips are useless, but I am sure that many, involving putting up shelters and educating children in remote areas rife with AIDS leaving very few people between 20-40years old healthy enough to teach can be beneficial. You do not know the details of the trip, so I find it interesting you seem to be able to judge it so harshly.
The OP also did not suggest fund raising and finding other people to pay for it, but was asking for ideas of how to work harder, earn more money, and pay for it themselves. Fund raising was only suggested by other posters. So, even if it is a glorified holiday, what do you care? Would you complain if the OP was saving for a holiday to the Maldives, or Ibiza to go clubbing and lay wasted in a gutter every night?
Someone has been inhaling too many dangerous chemicals in the lab I think.0 -
I think you all missed the point. The OP was saying they had 3 holidays booked and was short of money. The response was to cancel them but the OP said one was a charity expedition and they wanted to CONTINUE WITH THE CAUSE.
It's a holiday, not a cause. It's a Busmans Holiday. Some of you maybe too young to remember the TV show but that's all it is - working in a different environment with like minded people.
It's up to the OP what they do with their time and good on them if they want to go abroad. But don't think it's going to stand out on an UCAS application. 'I went to Japan to teach English' tells me you went to Japan on holiday and decided to help children whilst you were there. Going to an inner city area and working with some of the most deprived children in the UK living in poverty, many of whom are reluctant to learn, tells me a lot more about your character.
For the holiday abroad though people will ask 'how did you pay for it' - that's when they are looking at enterprising ideas such as cake sales, odd jobs, small businesses, working overtime at work. Those are the things that will stand out on an UCAS form - not what you actually did abroad.0
