If he has had a years service i would say that this could be unfair dismissal. Have a look at the ACAS website as it has more info there on proper procedures.

I was "sacked" for being off ill yet sadly didn't have a years service so no leg to stand on, but i hope things go better for your husband

Mental health problems, including anxiety, are covered by the DDA, under the same conditions as any other medical condition. So basically it has to have affected your functioning for 12 months.
