Which contraception?

I know this isn't a board to discuss medical issues, was just after opinions from ladies of a similar age...
I'm 40, single with one child (aged 14). Have noooooo interest whatsoever in having more children.
I'm in the last 6mths of my implanon implant, which, I must say has been great - no side effects at all. I'm just wondering what sort of contraception I could go for after I have my implant out....Apart from when I was pregnant I've always used contraception; the pill/depo jab and now the implant, and am wondering if its time to give my body a rest?
Has anyone gone down the sterilization route? what does it involve? Is it a long procedure?

Maybe you could book an appointment with your local family planning clinic and discuss your options with them, as they probably have more time than a GP and be able to answer any questions you may have regarding contraception.

At your age you can only have progesterone contraception. That means either implanon (good) or POP (if you want to take a pill again) or mirena (new type of coil; plastic with progesterone, not like the older copper type). You could take depo too, but personal choice. Go to your local CASH (contraception and sexual heath clinic) they can advise you.

Sterilization is done under general as a day case. Its done key hole and clips are placed on your tubes. Total time under GA is prob about 45mins, procedure about 20mins.

I always recommend 'patient.co.uk' excellent website for info.

I had a hysterectomy and oophrectomy but I was having trouble in that area. I found it easier to get over than natural childbirth.

Love my Mirena, no periods, very very very little monthly pain and nothing to worry about for 5 years at a time.

I took the mirena instead of the sterilisation - I just thought that was too final

I'm younger than you but love my mirenaa, and will have another when I have this removed. It has been trouble free and has stopped my periods. It is also the most reliable form of contraception apart from sterilisation.

I have the Mirena and it's great apart from it has made my teenage acne come back at nearly 30, apparenty this is quite common if you have previously suffered.
  • I'm 40 and was sterilised 2 years ago...it's great having a normal cycle back and not putting those chemicals in my body anymore, plus the peace of mind is fantastic. I had day surgery, I had a bit of strong period pain for the rest of that day and then was fine, they did keyhole surgery for me.
Well I can't stand by the side
And watch this life pass me by

    Just want to be...Happy
