Specsavers contact lenses drop in price - BUT...

I've been wearing Specsavers daily disposables for years - the ones which were £22 per month by direct debit. Last month when I got my 3 month supply by post they had upgraded me "at no extra charge" to another type which were £25 a month, Good or so I thought.
I didn't like these new lenses so I went into the shop and asked to go back to my usual kind. I was shocked, and a little angry to find that my original ones had decreased to £16 a month!!
They had taken it upon themselves to change my product instead of giving my old lenses to me at a cheaper rate! How presumptuous of them!!

So if any of you have been sent the upgraded lenses and are still paying £22 a month, you might like to change back for a saving of £6 a month!!

They ordered me replacement lenses of my old kind and gave me a refund of the £6 difference. My DD goes down as of next month. That's a saving of £72 a year.

Yes, I refuse to have mine sent, and always go instore to collect (£10 a month monthlies). Every year they try to change my lenses - so I give them a try for a week, and the new ones are usually worse as well as more expensive.

However, over only the last month I have had some dreadful lenses - the one for the right eye has split 4 times ie I have got through 4 lenses in one eye and that includes my two free replacement ones.

I am now trialling Sauflon dailies and what a difference although it will cost me £22 a month - but hey it is my sight.
  • I would NEVER get my lenses from SpecSavers, had so many problems with them i was even given a trial for my right eye only ie 5 pairs for right and 5 pairs for...right !! ( not left and right) if that makes any sense! he lost my notes, awful place, dont start me on the glasses

    Thanks for mentioning this, OP-:T

my packaing changed last time, but I assumed it was the same lenses - the lenses used to have a blue lid on each one, but now it's green - is that the same as what happened with yours?

I agree, the admin side is especially dire.

However, as I have already been with them for 13 years, I am persevering a little longer to be fitted with a good quality daily lens. Next week I will be trialling Acuvue 1 day moist.

Once I am happy, I can then buy a load from any online supplier (although I hate to say that Specsavers own website is one of the cheapest for these lenses).

When buying proper branded lenses, the supplier is probably not that important as long as they actually send what was ordered

Finally got round to going into Specsavers Dundee today - took the packagin with me and was told I'd been upgraded - apparently they don't bother telling you 'cos the new lenses are 'healthier for your eyes'

Veyr kind of them, but isn't it up to me to decide?

So once I told them yet again I definitely wanted to go back to my old type of lenses they admitted they would be cheaper.....

another thanks to the OP for mentioning this.

Hi Ailuro, (sorry for not replying earlier, I didn't see anyone had added to this thread)
Dundee Specsavers must be annoyed at the money they are losing as that's my store too! I was very annoyed when I went in with the letter as it was VERY misleading. No extra cost my eye - an extra £6 a month thank you very much! They also refunded me for the month since I had received the 3mth pack too - did they do this for you?

I assume you are now back on the "Tearial" lenses rather than the Opsys they sent. Good for you - enjoy your wee extra £6 a month - I now use this as extra spending money and enjoy spending it!

  • Well thanks to all for sorting out this mystery for me. I've been wearing contacts temporarily, just in one eye, cos a cataract op went wrong and left me severely short sighted in one eye and long sighted in another and glasses couldn't correct but a contact lens in one eye worked.

So.. 2 boxes last me 2 months (not buying more cos waiting for another op) and I know I paid £8 per box. Re-ordered over the phone and sent hubby to collect them last week and he said that they'd charged him £22. When he queried it they told him it was because I'd had them on Direct Debit they were cheaper???? No I hadn't - ever. Obviously, he didn't know any different so just paid up.

I was surprised at the price increase but just thought, oh well, it's only for a while. Now just opened the box and seen that they're a different colour lid. On close examination the only difference is that they are called Opsys and not Tearial. So obviously, from searching the net to see what difference there is between the two, and finding your experiences, I now know I have been ripped off in their subtle way of not telling you that there is a choice!!
  • Ive cancelled my Toric lens from Specsavers and gone to an independant, who has been there for over 25 years. Im paying an extra £7 a month, but its much better lens and i can feel the difference as my eyes dont get so tired!

My daughter is now wearing Daysoft lenses which she finds much more comfortable than the Johnsons Acuvue Moist she was wearing - they must be a third of the price.
  • I was getting really dry eyes and blurring in the evening so phoned Specsavers and they gave me a free trial sample of Accuvue because apparently the ones I have are only supposed to be for 8 hours maximum wear.

Didn't get on with the Accuvue at all. They're thinner and collapse more so very frustrating to get in when you can't see very well. Also vision didn't seem as clear. Went on the Medihelp website and they told me that thinner lenses might not correct my slight astimatism as well as the others so that might be why I wasn't seeing so well???

Gone back to the others. What would we do without the information on the net? The people who are supposed to advise you of these things just don't seem to either know or give out the information.

If I was going to be a long-term wearer I would do a lot more research but hoping once I have my eyes lined up by second op I will be able to get specs again. I don't mind lenses for occasional wear but I hate being dependant on them.
