    Ridiculous. Pathetic. Weak.

If routine is so hard to get out of (which it's not, unless you're lazy) then the longer you stay in routine the harder it will be to get out of.

Make change now. Don't wait - because guess what? It will never happen.

There is absolutely no reason the OP can't change their routine overnight.

Stop trying to find stupid excuses for why someone can't get a job when they supposedly want one.

So you feel you can speak for the entire population just because it is easier for you? Not everyone is like you. And, I'm not doing anything just because you have told me to.

I will quit my job when I'm ready to quit.

You're negative attitude is why you would struggle to get a job.

Seriously, people come here for advice, but they get sympathy and more excuses for not finding work. I might appear blunt in what I say, but I recognise laziness a mile off

I'm sorry, but it is always possible.

I have a job, which I am more than happy with, and yet don't have your negative attitude.

  • Hi Poorgrad,
Like others on this thread, that was me a couple of months ago - felt like there was no purpose to my life at all. Been unemployed since end of last year, applied for countless jobs and getting nowhere fast apart from further along the depression route.

I managed to pull myself out of it finally and have decided to go down the self-employment route, sorting everything out has made me get off my a**e and do something constructive. You need to get out of the house as much as possible and make contact with people in some way that's not going to cost you a fortune. Volunteering is great (I've done that in the past) and will make you some new contacts and, as one of the other replies says, who knows what could come out of it.

You are definitely not the only one going through this. There are an awful lot of people in the UK in your position and going through what you're going through. You will get through it. Keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on.

    Take care.

Would any of your sister's friends like to pay you to do some babysitting / childcare? Bit of extra income / reason to get dressed / contact with other people ...

  • Poorgrad - I was exactly the same, would stay up until 3am and not get up until lunchtime, live on pot noodles and other rubbish, and generally lost my zest for life

I'm still technically unemployed, but what I have done is started as an Avon Rep. With Avon you pay 2 x £7.50 to start up, but it comes out of your commission so you are not forking out up front

I love Avon products so I find them easy to sell, but it could just as easily be another direct selling company if Avon is not for you

But you'll get out there meeting people, and best of all you will earn money. granted it won't be a full time wage, but the more effort you put in, the more you will earn as you receive 20% or 25% of everything you sell. It will give you a reason to go out as you'll have to deliver brochures/orders and it won't get in the way of you looking for more work, as you work when you want to

Just a thought, and if you do decide to give it a go, head over to the Up Your Income board for tips and ideas geared towards all the individual companies, and help/supprt to sell more/earn more.

I have been looking for a job for almost a year now. Although I am currently working I am facing redundancy in the next month or two. After so many rejections I was starting to feel everything was a lost cause and the future seemed very grim. I then had a meeting with an Adult Education Advisor about part time study and how to plan for a future career. I came away feeling so much more positive about everything now that I have a plan in place. I am now looking into voluntary work that I can fit around employment and feel a lot better knowing I am working towards something.

Well if it's a depressing routine - change the routine. Some free activities:

    -Running
    -Walking
    -Meeting friends
    -Playing football
    -Reading
    -Write a short story
    -Self-taught martial art/yoga
-Learn a musical instrument (I purchased a keyboard a few years ago. You can get one cheap. I'm not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but I can play some interesting pieces and I find it relaxing)
    -Charity work
    -Preaching (if you're so inclined)

There's thousands of things you can do at no expense to change your routine. You have to have a positive outlook. You're going to get into a vicious cycle of depression and lose all motivation. Next thing you're living of benefits forever and will wonder why you wasted your life.

Find a business that you're interested in working for. Ring them up, tell them you want some work experience. Take things from there. If you don't go on to get full time employment, then at least you have added some meat onto your CV.

The other option is to give loads of excuses as to why this won't work and then inevitably, it never will (for you, at least).

    Be positive.

Hi Poorgrad. Sorry to be late to your thread - just wanted to say that Troy's advice is absolutely spot on - if you do even half of what he/she has suggested, you will pull out of it very quickly.

Get out of the house. Get up in the morning, get dressed and put your make-up on, no matter how you feel. Stop worrying and start acting. I woke up last Thursday thinking I could no longer stand being unemployed. Although I have used my time productively and learned lots of new things, I need money now. Within half a day, I got an interview for a shop job and was offered it. I've never worked in a shop, but there is nothing much around in my line of work which is a specialist field. I couldn't wait any longer to find the "right" job. I can't tell you how much better I feel just to have a job - any job.

    Good luck. :)
