Living with parents

Hellloooooo everyone, me again!!

TODAY'S QUESTION (lol)

I live with my parents, in question 6.7 it asks how much do other members of the household contribute each month to the household expenses. What do I include here what my parents pay for the following:

Mortgage
Council Tax
Water rates
gas
electricity
telephone
tv licence

as I pay three hundred pounds per month, do i work out the total of the above, subtract my three hundred and put down whats left. They have sky etc do I include that in there contributions? Do I break it down or just put a total figure?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Thanks

L xx

Generally if you are living with your parents you should not put down their income and expenses. you should just put down your income. In the expenses section you should put down just what you pay to them plus your own individual expenses (car etc). This obviously means you are going to be left with a larger surplus as you are responsible for less. This usually happens where parents let their children of with paying a low amount because (well their your parents). Therefore it may be a good idea to speak to your parents and ask what they would want as a fair contribution now that you dont have your debts to pay. I have seen cases where the OR has looked at someone that had expenses of just £100pm as this was all they were giving to their parents and has asked them to go away and come to a reasonble arrangement to pay more to their parents

Thanks for that Debtinfo. That makes things a bit clearer. I pay them three hundred pounds per month, do you think thats a reasonable amount or should I increase it a little?

    Thanks

I think your parents would be better placed to answer that?

When I lived at home, I paid £200/month and think that was broadly fair. I'd be surprised if you were costing your parents much more than £300/month by living there.

Ignore people on here that will tell you you should pay your parents "the going rate" to prepare you for life in "the real world". Yawn.

I presume that your parents are not claiming any benefits, or if they are that they are declaring this payment to them. (Don't want it to cause any problems for them that way.)

Thanks for that, I think three hundred pounds a month is fair. I do owe them nearly £1500 for helping me with my divorce but if I go BR they will just have to wait 3 years for that lol.
