Hi
Those individual fruit salads you get at the supers are really nice but very expensive for what you get.
I want to send my ds off to work with a cut up selection of fruit in a tupperware type bowl, but I just wondered if anyone can tell me how you stop apples going brown? Do you put them in water or juice?
I am concerned about him getting enough vitamins but he has a very short lunch break as do I and munching through an apple, peeling oranges etc is a bit time consuming to eat.
Any advice on how you do it? Ta

Hi,
I don't usually put apples in my fruit salads, but normally it's a squeeze of lemon juice that everyone recommends to stop apples/bananas turning brown.0 -
Doh! It never occurred to me to leave the apple out!:p I guess I was just focussed on apples being relatively cheap! Thank you.:)Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Hello OP,
Using some lemon juice in the liquid will prevent or slow down the browning process - but what I tend to do is put the apple at the bottom of any pot I'm using, then add all the other fruit on top and make sure there's juice to cover at least the apples properly. I think the nicest way to make a fruit salad is to start by cutting up a big juicy melon, then you have delicious liquid content from the outset. If I can be bothered I make a sugar syrup (combine 500ml water with 100g sugar, bring to boil, simmer for 2 mins) - if not, I open a tin of fruit in syrup and use that. HTH!0 -
Make the sugar syrup as above (you can of course make a smaller amount) or just add any suitable fruit juice.0

I know what you mean, I've made my own, Cost first of buying little plastic pots, but of course you can re-use these so not expensive in the long run. Then spoon in fruit salad, they do say one of your five a day so not bad, then pour jelly over.
Or, Tesco's do a box of frozen fruit salad for between £1.00 and £1.50 its a big box. I keep this in the fridge and just take a portion each day.0 -
When I worked in a school kitchen last year we made fruit salads a few hours before needed and put in all fruit except bananas. We poured orange juice from a carton over the fruit and mixed it. This stopped the apples going brown.Wendy0

If you purchase the little tubs then filling them with jelly or angel delight makes a really nice and inexpensive treat too!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Cheaper option - jif lemon (in a bottle). I regularly take cut-up fruit to work (even if it's not fruit salad I don't like apples whole
) and i just splosh some on the apple pieces while on the cutting board, mix round with hands, and put in the tupperware. You usually can't taste it really doing it this way (just enough to coat) so it also works well if you like sweeter / tropical fruits etc (grapes, melon, pineapple...).
Just an added tip - I'd invest in a couple of small 'lock and lock' type tupperware containers - then you can send the 'wettest' fruit (ie tinned pineapple in juice) without fear of leaks.0
