Jersey - VAT

I'm (at early stages of) considering buying Samsung 27" LE27T51BX HD Ready LCD TV
but am worried that I'll land a VAT bill on arrival, £96.25 extra on top isn't very attractive! Nowhere (that I can see anyway) does it say they'll prepay the VAT or that I'm definitely liable for it on arrival although it does suggest I may be.
Does anybody know the situation with Play.com and VAT - I've only ordered dvd's below the £18 threshold before.

You can't expect customs to see a big Samsung 27" box (I have the 32" which cost me £642 inc. Freemans 25% discount and quidco 5% and the box is marked on all sides) and think it's worth less than £18...
So it's swallow the 17.5% and th 2.5% custom charge so its 20% more IF it comes from Jersey AND it's taken in by customs (likely imo).
Isn't the 25% off at Freemans still on? Don't see why you shouldn't be able to get the same thing I got see this thread:

Surely Play should give a specific warning if VAT will be applied! I don't know what you mean 2.5%.0

From there T+C's
If your delivery address is outside of Jersey, you may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once a shipment reaches your country. Any such additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by you. You should note that customs policies vary widely from country to country; Play.com advises each customer to contact their local customs office for further information.
I Know 7 Day shop now pay the VAT for goods over £18 i would email PLAY to clarify the situation as they might do the same if its to the UK0 -

If you are quick freemans have a 30% code out right now and combined with 5% of at quicdco gives you a very nice discount at freemans. So you can choose a 32" samsung for slight more than what you are paying here or a 26" samsung for £420 before using quidco which will give you another 5% (but it takes about two months to get this 5% from quidco).
It is quite likely you will have to pay a customs charge on this.
although it is a bit of a lottery as they tend to look out for items from america
you will also get slapped a charge for presenting the customs charge for you by the courrier. you could be looking at an extra £120 in vat and charges.
It doesnt seem worth the hassle.
Use 30% of at freemans but be quick its not going to last long"Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
To my eyes it's quite misleading Play showing a price "delivered" if there may be VAT slapped on top in addition.
Oh, and according to the Revenue & Customs website the customs duty on televisions is 14%, not 2.5%.
Note though customs duty isn't generally payable on goods from Channel Islands, so hopefully just need to consider VAT and courier handling fee.
Best to do is try get a clear answer from Play before you buy.0 -
right, I import goods from all over the world & some times you get lucky, but on something like a huge TV box with 'Hello I'm an expensive TV' blasted across it, it would be an absolute miracle if you don't get vat + customs. Its a chance you take but I'd say 98% for sure you will get hit.
The only way I manage to avoid it so much is cos I have my senders declare the goods under value & as gift (but then I can't have insurance so its swings & roundabouts). But thats a risk, & you certain don't ever hear me complaining when I do get charged.
Clearly a company such as Play isn't going to do that though. If you really are worried about it, I'd say forget it & just get it over here instead.
Its not misleading at all for Play to state a delivered price as its NOT THEM charging the vat & duty. I find it amazing that some one would whinge about it being 'misleading', but they don't mind at all defrauding the governement & avoiding customs!0 -
Although the Channel Islands form part of the Customs territory of the EC, they are not full member states and are not part of the Single European Market for VAT purposes. None of the islands has a VAT regime, therefore traders established in the islands are not required by the insular authorities to be registered for such a tax. As a result, all goods shipped to the islands from full member states of the EC must be treated as export trade in the same manner as merchandise destined for Third Countries. Exports to the islands should therefore be zero rated for VAT.
Goods exported from the Channel Islands consigned to a member state of the EC are liable to VAT upon importation at the rate applicable in the country of destination.
You there need to be sure whether PLay.com have already paid the relevant duty on the TV set otherwise you almost certainly will.0 -
Tooth fairytooth, Jersey and Guernsey are NOT part of the EU or the EEA. They are Crown Terrotories and make up part of the British Isles BUT NOT part of the UK."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0

You won't have to pay any customs tax - Play prepay it for you. Have a look at this thread discussing Play and see my post 7.

You could also phone (0845 800 1020) or email Play just to confirm the situation if you're worried.0
