You're liable for CT on a dwelling from the date you become entitled to occupy or own that dwelling, not when you move in. However if the dwelling is unoccupied or substantially unfurnished you will get an exemption from payment for up to 6 months. But bear in mind part or all of this 6 month period may have been used up by previous occupier.

As others have posted always be truthful in dealings with councils about CT.

You have just made me realise why i haven't had a bill!!!
I received a pink pay slip looking thing addressed to the previous owners. It had council on it so was obviously about the council tax. They would have had it vacant for about 2 months prior to me moving in.
Therefore i just put it back in the post box as 'not at this address'. So no doubt it'll take a while to get back through and then they will send one to me.

But i've rang up anyway to sort it out.

Thanks for al lthe advice people

However, i thought being the persistent people they are that they would file it and review that file at least once a month. Obviously not.

Persistent but often very slow...it might take months or years, but they won't take that for an excuse when they do finally demand the cash...
