Verge of Dismissal for fuel car usage

The company provides both the ability to use the company car for private use and also to use the fuel from the fuel card for private use without no limits being applied. This is because the fuel card for personal use on a company car attracts a fixed amount of tax based upon CO levels etc.

I thought why waste company money and request for a hire car when I have several in our household and merely not use the company car and use the other cars in the house in this extenuating circumstance.

It seems evident that a lot of people have "assumed" that you can use the fuel card for other cars when the company car is not available.

If it was clearly defined and explained - this matter would never have arisen - the last thing I want is to throw away 11 yrs of service.

As Zazen999 mentioned - I'm definetly being used as an example - because of my 12 weeks sick leave - my usage looks the worse.

I just hope the outcome isn't dismissal - especailly under the current climate.

I think dismissal would be harsh.

I would accept a written warning which say comes off your record after 12 months with no more incidents.
  • How many other people have done the same as you? They would have to dismiss them all if they dismiss you.

Did you not ever think you were breaking the law by using numerous vehicles that you would not be insured to drive for work ? I have sympathy with your employment situation but you should have showed more common sense. When you use a fuel card they always ask for the vehicle registration which would enable the company to check the 2-3 cars you cannot remember. After 11 years i am amazed you did not know all the condtions.

    Hi everyone,
Earlier this year I was of ill for 12 weeks due to dislocating my left knee - so 6 weeks while i was in a cast no fuel was used but after that when I was able to get back on my feet and had to get to physios etc - i found I couldnt drive the company car (manual gears) so I drove my other cars in the household which are all autos. I also had other autos from friends because the cars in my family are used by other members of the family - and while they were in my posession I used my fuel card to fill them up - again for the sole reason - couldnt drive the company car.

    Any guidance??

Do you reimburse the company for private fuel? If so isn't the problem here that you used the fuel card for private use without reimbursing the company?

Or is private fuel use a benefit in kind ? If so the company is being rather heavy handed, are you sure they aren't trying to set up a paper trail to get rid of you for some other reason?

To be honest it was a little naive to fill up other peoples cars with a company fuel card intended for a company vehicle.
