I have used permanent marker on a black top that had a toothpaste stain on it, and it did work, though it was a slightly different "shade" of black. I'd try wundaweb for the cut, or the thing Penny suggested.

And like Hester, I find Vanish spray really good for stains, especially greasy ones. Though I did find that houshold (green) soap worked well when rubbed onto a fruit juice stain yesterday.

    OK, admission time...

I had a tomato (?) stain on the label of my Broiderie Anglais blazer, which I tried to 'Vanish' off in the washing up bowl.

What I hadnt realised was that the washing up bowl had a delicate layer of greasy tea all over it. It's beautifully clean now, but that's because it's all over the jacket instead!

I tried to wash it off in a 60º wash with Fairy Gel, which is biological, but it didnt work so now I have a greasy, tea coloured Broiderie Anglais jacket and the stain on the lapel didnt come out, either! ARGH!

It is 100% cotton but the embroidery is polyester so Mum reckons if I bleach it, the embroidery might shrink, ruining the jacket (further!).
So, HELP! What do you think might work?

Mum's wondering about Swarfega to try and shift it but will that work?

I hope someone has an answer... its my favourite (and poshest) summer jacket.
    Please, please help!

Try washing it with an inwash stain remover like vanish or stain devil. If not ace bleach in the wash with it, this is meant for stain removing and is less likely to do nasty things than just using domestos!

Bleach won't shrink the embroidery but it might make it discoloured.

If you really can't get it white then you could dye it a colour, but beware that the polyester won't pick up the dye the same as the cotton so it might end up a bit two tone but if you went for say pink or purple that could look very pretty!

try putting the affected item into a clean bowl of warm water with washing up liquid added. soak and then try to wash. washing up liquid works well with grease marks, but i normally rub it in neat.

If you're going to use washing up liquid then I would suggest Surcare Washing up Liquid, its doesn't contain any dyes which could transfer colour to your jacket.

Fairy Liquid (other makes don't work as well) usually gets stains out if you rub a bit into the stain before washing in the normal way. It should also remove grease. Permament marker should cover bleach stains on the black top. Wonderweb will mend the slit on the other tee shirt but I would also run a line of (machine) stitching along each of the sides of the slit to reinforce.

  • I use a pre-wash spray called DeSolv-it which I buy in Tesco. Its not very OS but I have used it successfully on grass stains, grease stains and tar. Have to say it really, really smells when you spray it so either do it outside or have the doors and windows open!
