Hi Almafolk firstly ignore the rude posters on here they get their kicks out of winding people up.I understand where you are coming from.Last week i went to buy an expensive mobile phone for my neices 21st birthday pressie but when i asked about their returns policy and they said that if the box were opened,no mention of it being used, only if seal is broken they would not take it back.Needless to say i did not buy it.The losers here will be Argos they will lose customers with this policy. They wont be getting anymore custom from me.If i were you i would check out your rights with Trading Standards and hopefully they will be more helpful to you than some of the posters on here.

OK. Let me put it a bit clearer.
    1. The hairdryer was used once, for less than 5 minutes.
    2. I did have the cable neatly tied up and the hairdryer remains in a resaleable condition. Since it's not a fryer, there's no grease of course. Some products are certainly easier to keep to the resaleable standard than others.

    Understand that.

    3. The store staff did not actually bother to open the packaging and take a look. Soon as they heard it was used once. They rejected the return.

Well the staff are following store policy. While you might have a problem with Argos, you can't really blame the staff for doing as instructed.

    4. So ironically, if I had bought the hairdryer online, I'd have better chance to return it and get a refund successfully? Is there any viable logic to this situation?

No, but don't go expecting the law to be logical or we'll be here all month.

You can return a product under SOGA but you need a "proper" reason to do so. There is a possibility that the product actually is faulty (as you say its much less powerful than you would expect from using products of a similar spec) which would certainly be a reason to return the product.

Say, if I bought a cardigan from Gap, even if I had cut the tag and try it on, I still can obtain a refund later. They are not daft, surely?

    The Gap are not Argos.

And why do customers have to be treated with great suspicion by the shops?

Well this one is easy. See MilkyJoe's reply.

Trading Standards can't give you any more rights. The advice given so far has mostly been sound - legally the OP does not have a leg to stand on.

However, IF the hairdryer has been repacked as well as is claimed then why not return it to a different branch, say it is unused and claim a refund?
