help with metal buttons on jeans

i've just found a pair of jeans that i bought in a sale months ago. i got them for pennies because the main button to do them up was missing. I need to add a new one.
the jeans have a lot of buttons on them, most of which are decorative rather than functional. I'd like to remove these and change them for a different colour as gold buttons aren't my style :D
does anyone have any experience of replacing buttons on jeans? can it be done without damaging the fabric? is it an easy job or should i just learn to live with the gold buttons and just replace the missing one?
any help gratefully received

Jeans buttons usually need a pair of plyers if not two one each side to remove and are not easy unless of course you don't want them to come off . . . .
Usually the hole is not much better if not smaller than the usual holes made by the threads. If you get buttons with the holes at the back on a tab then they should hide anything.
Good luck
