Difference between types of eyeliner.

Have been wondering what the difference is between regular pencil liner, kohl liner & kajal pencil eyeliners.
Can anyone enlighten me. :)

  • I think Kohl and Kajal are basically the same thing..... but I'd stand to be corrected.

To be honest I always just buy the cheapest eyeliner going, they tend to be pretty much the same and often the cheaper ones are the best.

I do have one black one though that smudges badly.

I think khol/kajal are alot softer than regular 'eyeliners' because of this they can be used on your waterlines.

(I dont mean to hijack the thread; but my tuppence worth, Ive tried and tested No 7, liquid liner and had to throw it, the nib is much too time consuming and I was constantly correcting mistakes, Im using a more expensive brand right now (but only cos I have to use it up) but this still is nowhere near as good as rimmels cheapo liquid liner, it has great staying power and a very fine, shaky hand friendly, brush point):D

I've recently started wearing eyeliner again and my fave has been an Elizabeth Arden pencil one. It seems to glide on really well, whereas cheaper ones I've tried need too much pressure. It has a little sponge tip on the other end so you can "soften" the line if you prefer.

I wear specs for reading & close work (like putting on eyeliner!) so I use a magnifying mirror to apply it but how I wish there was something better.

I haven't found a pencil that doesn't smudge but love bourjois liquid eyeliner as it stays put. As for the pencils I don't think there is a difference, is it not just semantics?

  • I was curious because a few of my eyeliners are either kajal or kohl pencils. I hadn't noticed before.

I would love to use a liquid or gel eyeliner, just not sre how to apply it.

I never understand when magazines say it is tricky to apply liquid eyeliner as I find it much easier to get a good finish than with pencils. A personal bugbear of mine is when you see people with eyeliner on (particularly black) and there is a gap between their lashes and the liner. you see lashes, pink eyelid then liner, It looks ridiculous.

Personally I prefer liquid liners with brushes rather than pen nibs and contrary to what the magazines say I start from the inside and work my way out. I try to draw the line along the base of my lashes rather than on the eyelid which generally means any mascara gaps are filled in and I have a line without gaps. Depending on what look I am going for will determine where on my lid the line starts.

The best tip i can give you is get a really cheap eyeliner and just practice. Once you have mastered the discreet line to define your eyes, flicks and stuff like that is really easy.

I swear by Smashbox cream eyeliners. The Jet Set and Shadowliner versions stay on through everything.
  • The absolute easiest way to line your eyes, that also doesn't smudge badly it to use eye shadow and a damp angled brush. Much softer looking that liquid or pencil too.
