Hi all, my Eton Mess was a success and everyone enjoyed it. I normally have a very sweet tooth and I would rather eat a pudding as a main, but I was surprised I did find this even for me quite sickly sweet and could not eat my normal size portion.0

Does anyone know how long an eton mess would last before the meringues went soft.
Im going on a posh picnic tomorrow and wondering if this would travel well if it was made up 8 in the morning for lunch.
Thanks

I would suspect that 8.00am till lunch would result in a 'soggy' mess. could I suggest that you use two containers and keep the meringues separate from the fruit and cream etc. then crumble the meringue into the mixture at the last minute?0
-
Not sure really but could you not just do everything else and at lunchtime just break the meringues into it and stir.
And I lurve Eton Mess....................make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks for the replies so quick. Hadnt thought of doing it that way. Think I may separate the strawberries as well and make the whole thing up when I get there.I hope that my child, looking back on today

I discovered at the weekend that the meringues don't last two minutes after I made Eton mess about 2 hours before we ate it and whilst we were eating everyone looked puzzled and asked me if i'd forgotton to put the meringues in! Doh!HSBC Visa-High interest-£2349.23 Nat West £2605.18

I have got strawberries , extra thick cream and home made strawberry meringue,( not made by me), and I know it's simple but how do you make it and what else do I add? Will it taste better standing for half an hour or should. I make it fresh?0

Cut up strawberries, whip cream, add a couple of spoons of icing sugar to the cream. Break up meringues. Layer strawberries, cream and meringues in a bowl (or individually in glasses) Serve!I Believe in saving money!!!:T

Or you can just mix it all up in a bowl, (bit of icing sugar in the whipped cream, break the meringues) then transfer to desert glasses or even wine glasses. Thats why its called Eton MESS.
I'm coming round, its my favourite, lol.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
