I wanna un-block my toilet!

Not sure if this is in the right place really but i could really do with some help as Im having a mare of a week. Central heating packed in, house alarm failed since power cut at the weekend and now this

My downstairs loo is bloked, no idea why. Tried the usual, I really dont want to have to call anyone in (£££) does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

  • You could try caustic soda from a hardware shop. Most prob caused by a back up toilet paper/tissue/nappies or sanitary towels. If possible, you could hire or borrow some drain rods and lift the man hole cover nearest to the toilet and try clearing the blockage yourself.

    Good luck, it's a bit of a sh*tty job!

  • Yep. Pour it in, let it stand for a few hours, over noght if poss. Then flush. When you flush does the water come to the top of the bowl and slowly drain?

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper
NB Don't mix any other chemicals (like bleach, for example) with the caustic soda - let it do a solo job! (Job lol lol lol)

  • You could try soda crystals and vinegar if you have any, although that probably won't be strong enough for 'heavy' paper blockage.

If we get a blocked toilet, I normally use a largish sink plunger and plunge it up and down a few times. It's never failed so far....

Try a wire coat hanger? See if that dislodges anything or finds anything that should not be there.

Best bet is lift the manhole cover outside - if thats clear then the caustic soda may work - if not then the blockage is further away. Go buy a set of drain rods from B&Q if you can't borrow any

The loo in our house blocks regularly.
We always clear it with buckets of hot water.
Will try the custic soda trick as well next time though.
    Thanks for the tip!
