Can I get a mortgage with my American fiance??

Never going down the simplest road I have met and fallen for an American. He lives and works in London. He has a 5 year work visa and has been living in the UK for 1 year so far. He pays UK tax and everything

I have a house and mortgage of my own currently. We are getting married next year would like to buy a home together. I asked the company who I have my mortgage with if we could get a mortgage with them but they said he would have to be a permanent UK resident. Does this mean he needs to have indefinate leave to remain or to become a British Citizen before they'll consider him? Are there any companies that will let a foreign national have a UK mortgage? Or is he best (being as he has the largest income) trying to get a US mortgage for property abroad?

I am dead confused....help!!
