Silverscreen DVD closing down sale!

Hi!
sorry if this has been posted but I've checked & couldn't find anything!

SilverScreen, the DVD retailer has gone into receivership & while the owners are trying desperately to sell it as a going concern, they are still trying to reduce running costs & unfortunately have to close a few stores.

BUT! this is good news for bargain hunters as most of their stock (except the brand new top of the chart stuff) is down to as little as half price! & they weren't that expensive to begin with!

check out https://www.silverscreen.co.uk for your nearest store!

No sign of receivership on the website - quite the opposite if you read the BS quoted below:

It’s an exciting time to start a career with Silverscreen, as we continue to grow and expand with more store openings planned for this year. We believe that with every new store opening brings a special, entertainment experience to a new group of customers as well as their community. It also creates new and exciting job opportunities for someone like you, who want to be a part in sharing our passion about entertainment.

“We’re extremely excited about our expansion and the opportunity to further our service area as well as the career opportunities it will bring about. The feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive and only reinforces our commitment to our customers” (Head of H.R.)

So what's the real story I wonder ????
  • I went to the Luton store yesterday. Plenty of big posters all over the shop reading "Store closing - Up to 50% off" No small print saying closed for refurbsihment or other such get out clauses, BUT the poster did state "Participation of Concessions is Optional" or similar words. I like to think of myself as reasonably articulate and literate, but I couldn't for the life of me understand what THAT meant. Perhaps that they don't have to reduce stock?!

Anyway, in store the offers are very poor. Non chart DVD's only have been reduced and they were reduced by a measly 10% OFF THE RRP. Which means it's still cheaper on t'Internet

Don't be fooled folks, this is not worth rushing to Silverscreen for.
Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills...
  • I was walking past silverscreen in cardiff the other day and they had a big notice stating "closing down sale". Poped inside for a browse and noticed that many dvds had increased in price, In particular the Boxsets.
    Closing down sale my !!!!!!.
Watch out, you never know who is about.
  • £5 off when you spend £30 in the Birmingham bullring store, which hasn't been open long

Same in Crawley... £5 off £30... as well as an "up to 50% discount", but all radically overpriced in the first place... couldn't find a single bargain. Don't make a special trip for this, it's really not worth it.
Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.

Newcastle Eldon Square store has loads of A4 flyers in the window, labelling it as Silverscreen....In Administration, and there are the names of the administrators on the document as well.

They're selling loads of stocl cheap, including the £5 off for spending £30 on anything....
    £4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
    £400 O/D Lloyds TSB
    £2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
    £5070 Black Horse Finance

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

    From the FT;

In Administration Trading as Silverscreen dvd Entertainment.

The Joint Administrators, Andrew J Pepper and Peter M Saville seek expressions of interest for either investors in the business or purchasers of the business and assets as a going concern:

65 Stores nationwide, including head office
    Significant leasehold property portfolio
    Forecast turnover approximately £65million
    Stock at cost approx £10million
    Approximately 650 employees

So most definitely closng down to all those doubting thomases who offered up their !!!!!!. :D

I haven't had a proper look in there but I've seen loads of people coming out with carrier bags full! so I'm guessing they are pretty damn cheap!
  • Went in to the Trafford Centre store today, agree with others about prices. Even with various discounts and incentives, prices were no cheaper than other shops like HMV and Virgin today. I bought my lad a Harry Potter DVD in WHSmiths for £6.99, a £1 cheaper than Silverscreen.

Absolutely pants in there, I was just walking past so thought I would have a browse and you can get dvds cheaper than their "sale" prices online! Seriously not worth the bother, although I do feel really sorry for the staff there I was offered a job at one of their branches last year and am glad I stayed with my current employer!

I bought Gone With the Wind, a good price I think for £5.99. But generally, yes, the prices still seem high for sale stock.
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)
