Made a cake and forgot to add the sugar! yuk!

My daughter and I made a cake this morning.
We took it out of the oven when it had finished cooking, it looked lovely. We waited until it had cooled to try a piece and....yuk! We'd forgotten the sugar!
Is there anything we can do to save it from the dustbin?

  • Weigh out the amount of sugar you should have added , put it in a pan with 200ml water and heat with stirrring to make a syrup then pour that over the cake?

Set up a stall outside your door and sell it as a newly invented diet version? :D

I'd slice it, put jam inside, pour custard over it and have it as a pud.

It's important to poke the top with a fork, to make holes for the syrup to go down. If you add some vanilla extract to the syrup, you might even pretend you intended to do it that way.:rotfl:

Slice it up, spread with jam and use in a trifle.

  • Or make syrup with equal quantities of sugar and water, a splash of rosewater and a cinnamon stick. Maybe even pop some almonds, pistachios or walnuts on top.

If all else fails, give the birds a treat.

Thank you for all the great suggestions:j
We have cut lots of bits off and tried all the different suggestions, so there is hardly any left now!
Gonna have the rest after dinner, for our pud. We liked it best with golden syrup on.

There is one thing about it.

You will not forget the next time you make cake.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Sounds like a cake my dad would love with his yogurt, he hates sugar.

Another suggestion is to add lemon juice to the (sugar and water syrup).

Or just adding a thick layer of icing on top?
  • I know you've sorted it now but I would've made some sweet buttercream frosting and sandwiched it with some jam. The sweetness in the buttercream would've masked the lack of sugar in the cake!
