Sorry if this is elsewhere - parmesan ends, and yucky cereal - help!

Options
Hi all,
Sorry if there is info on these already here, have done a quick search and not found anything. I'd like to pick your brains on how to use up a couple of things.

1- the hard ends of parmesan. We love parmesan and always have a bit on the go, but no matter what we do re storing it and wrapping it up, we always have the hard end bit left. I now have quite a collection!! Loathe to throw it away. Do you think it would melt into mash, or does anyone have a fabby idea of what to do with it?

2 - we were given a box of nestle golden nuggets cereal but it's appaling, nobody in the family will go near it it's just completely not to our tastes, very very sweet and I think full of artificial bits. What on earth can I do with this????

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I hope you've all had a good weekend and not got too wet in the torrential showers.

Ely

I use ends of parmesan to flavour risotto, my mother uses them to flavour soup, especilly minestrone. :)
  • We eat the nuggets like popcorn!!! Much nicer without milk (IMO!!). Sorry I don't have any other suggestions though..

I use the rind of parmesan to infuse in warm milk, then use to make a sauce.
Sometimes I put half of the rind into a bolognaise mix while it simmers for a while, and remove before serving. (the cheesy bit goes gooey and is quite yum to eat - cook's perks! - but the rind is hard and I just throw this away as the flavour has gone by this time.)

    It's only a game

Every now and again we make NL's pea soup, which is basically 450g frozen peas, and 500ml stock.

She suggests 'bunging in' any ends of parmesan you have lying around... you can shove them in the freezer til then. They melt down nicely :)

Can you make the cereal into rice crispy type cakes (or is that a waste of good chocolate)? If you did it in time for some kind of summer fair or bake sale or simliar, then you could kindly donate them - someone will enjoy them!

  • Whizz the cereal to crums in a blender or smash it to bits in a bag and use as sweet crumbs for cheesecake base/crumble topping/on ice cream.
  • Blitz cheese in processor and mix with breadcrumbs. I'd give the cereal to the birds (soaked)

Wow I thought I was the only one who boils up the parmesan crusts in the minestrone! Either there are a lot of Italians in this forum, or we (the Italian) we are slowly but surely colonising the English kitchen - and that can't be a bad thing :rotfl:IMHO

Funny snippet: First time I did this my (English) husband got really upset when he chewed inadvertently on the parmesan skin because he thought he had chewed on a slug :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Celebrate frugal, tasty cookery!

Sorry can't help with cereals because I don't use them much myself.

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
