Wisdom tooth removal on NHS? 3 week wait in pain!!

Locally it is several months for consultation and then months afterwards to take wisdom tooth out. Typically patient is waiting 18 months even when in severe pain .
The pain is caused by food/plaque compacting under gum over top of wisdom tooth. Even though it's sore/bleeds be ruthless about brushing here and it will keep infection under control. If you smoke you will be more likely to have problems so cut down/stop.0 -
Toothsmith - at last we almost agree on something, but please tell me why you shouldn't try and dilute your own hydriogen peroxide? The instructions on the bottle are quite clear...
Serious question.

It doesn't matter how clear instructions are, someone, somewhere will get it wrong with bad consequences.
At the time of writing this, 855 people have viewed this thread. I think it's important to be aware of that.
I do not know the intellectual capacity of every one of those 855 people, so as someone who people believe to be a dentist, I have to be very careful about what I advise.
I'm sure a fair percentage of them could successfully dilute a bottle of peroxide, but statistically, someone WILL get it wrong. Buying a bottle of Peroxyl will have no harmful consequences for anybody, therefore, that's what I advise. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Point taken. Thanks for explaining.

ask your doctor for mefenamic acid tablets 500mg they worked for me when i had dental pain ( abscesse) useually for period pain but they work great for dental painHello all,
My gum is growing over my wisdom tooth it started about 3 days ago and my face swelled up. The swellings gone down but my the swelling on the inside remains. The gum is covering the tooth, I went to an nhs walk in centre who prescribed metronidazole. I found a nhs dentist the next day who said I would have to have the wisdom tooth removed an would refer me on to a hospital/ surgery but its a 3-4 week wait and that they would contact me
The pain is intolerable I still can close my mouth fully, cant eat properly cant sleep because of the pain in my tooth and head. Currently popping pain killers all the time.
Not sure where to turn, If I go private would they take it out straight away? Anyone had similiar?
Thanks0 -
Good old fashioned aspirin isn't bad either.
Not to be taken for a good week before the extraction appointment though, or you'll bleed forever! How to find a dentist.

I've just finished my 5 day course of antibiotics, which seemed to clear up the infection.
I bought a dental repair kit from Boots (£6.99) for D.I.Y. fillings. It seems to do the trick, but it doesn't take much for the fillings to fall out again. There's enough in 1 kit to do several fillings, so I've just replaced them when they've come out. Hopefully I'll figure out how to make it last more than a couple of days and that will see me through until I finally get it seen to on the NHS.
I went to the GP also, but she just told me to double up on pain killers (take double strength ibuprofen + co-codamol).
They say not to take co-codamol for more than 3 days because it becomes addictive...it will be interesting to put that to the test in 6 weeks!0
