If someone is moving from a £200k house to a £300k house, it's still going to be cheaper when the market has dropped 20% and you're now moving from a £160k house to a £240k house.

You miss the point. The figures show that they don't both fall by 20%.

The more expensive houses fall by less than the cheaper ones. Negating the savings in many cases.

Yep, I think I'd rather be buying post-crash than pre-crash.

Suit yourself. For many, if not most, it will be a lot closer than you think.

OK - My house (2 bed terrace ftb property) was down from 315 to 250 (at lowest - may be back up a little now)

Properties (3/4 bed semis in good school catchment areas) I would look to move to were 425-525 and are still 425 - 525

Net cost to move up increased from 80 (just about affordable) to 175 (you have got to be joking) - and I didn't move 18 months ago because I was expecting equal percentage reductions to close the gap.
    ?

    Precisely my point.

This is happening in most areas, perhaps not to that scale, but significant gaps are opening up.

The potential upsizers are losing out at an alarming rate. The crash is making it harder, not easier, for many of them.

Why am I wasting my time typing a response to this total and utter tripe. Who on earth is upsizing to the 425k properties then? Are people magicking money out of thin air? The crash only affects some of the rungs on the ladder? Rich people can afford not to lower their prices? It's absolute and complete nonsense.

Do you have idea how a housing chain works. A moves up to B, moves up to C - it's quite a few links before the 4 bed 500k houses are reached.

    Get Property Bee. Get informed.

Good point, no doubt he would tell us property is rising by 50k a week in Aberdeen.

So I had a look myself at 3 bed detached houses in Aberdeen. They look just as deluded as Hamish.

New homes, on the market since September 2008, they can't sell it, so over the last 2 months, have increased the price by 2k a month.

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/new-homes/property-21528464.html?locationIdentifier=REGION^4&sortByPriceDescending=false&minBedrooms=3&minPrice=160000&displayPropertyType=houses&radius=5.0&oldDisplayPropertyType=houses&pageNumber=1&backToListURL=%2Fproperty-for-sale%2Ffind.html%3FlocationIdentifier%3DREGION%255E4%26sortByPriceDescending%3Dfalse%26minBedrooms%3D3%26minPrice%3D160000%26displayPropertyType%3Dhouses%26radius%3D5.0%26oldDisplayPropertyType%3Dhouses

Search for 3 beds, 5 mile radius of Aberdeen, and they keep putting them up, all been on for nearly a year.

Think it must be a scottish thing.

Ones been on since July 2008, still no sell, lets whack 6k on it! Woop!

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong anyway? Searched for 3 bed places, 5 miles of Aberdeen, only getting 19 properties, nearly all new builds. !!!!!! kind of city is this.

I like this one though, its like delusion one month, realisation the next, then off to auction.

There's a good reason for there being a glut of "detached rural buildings" for sale around aberdeen.

And there's a good reason why most of them have been abandoned............

Nobody in their right mind would want to live in such a cold, damp, grey and lifeless place.

There speaks someone who has nay ventured along the Loch Lehmans shores, sipping a Glenn McSporran on the eve of Berns Night. To sip from neep soup and listen to ten thousand bagpipes flappulating in glorious unison is truly to feel at one with the world. Even the simple joy of sitting at home with a bottle of ten month old Scotch, with your feet warming in a washing up bowl full of scottish oil - aye - it makes me wistful to think of it.

    We moved to Surrey.

    I've heard of it.

You're looking in the wrong place.

Rightmove doesn't get a lot of business up here.

    Try this instead.
