Need Advice For Tricky Situation?!?!

It really is a blessing to have a website like this! If someone could help with the following problem I'd be immensely grateful. I'm 23 years old and up until Christmas I was a first year university student. In December I was in a car accident in Wales and sustained a considerable amount of injuries resulting in my having to defer a year from university (starting again this September). One of the biggest injuries I've sustained is a deformed nose due to a really awkward break, I have tried going through the NHS with this but to no avail, and in all honesty I wouldn't trust their surgeons anyways. So to get to the point, I'm unemployed but still technically a student, I will be able to find employment again after I've recovered and will be able to repay a loan, but due to my circumstances and the need to have the operation abroad, I think that my chances are heavily limited. I'm looking for a loan of £5000. Does anyone know of any lenders who would be able to cover this sum with my circumstances being as they are?

Just in case, I've tried lots of avenues regarding the NHS and insurance but there's nothing that can be done, all that I can no do is seek a loan, something which gives me no joy whatsoever but I'd really like to have my nose fixed as soon as possible.

Thanks For Reading :o

I think you chances are very slim.
You have no means of repaying a loan (even those with a deferred repayment period).
Why do you have to have the operation abroad?
You don't trust surgeons working for NHS but forget that a number do private work as well.
If you suffered an injury who not contact a no win no fee solicitor to win damages for you which you could use to pay for the treatment.

That would be my idea too. If you are not responsible for the accident, but another person, you could try to get your damages and costs "repaid" by them (or their insurance). It will not give you back your lost time , but maybe some peace of mind. A loan, even if you could get it, is not a solution, it's a trap, the beginning of debts instead of savings and investments.

  • I was responsible for the accident and no other car was involved, I've tried the insurance route but to no avail. I really take on board what you've both said about getting into debt, it's an evil empire and I wouldn't even consider it if I wasn't in such a predicament; although I have no respiratory problems with my nose, aesthetically it's a mess and it's gone a long way towards undermining my self confidence. A loan is all I have to turn to if I'm to have surgery. My aim is to find one and then pay it off as soon as possible without ever taking one out again, I just want to get this behind me.

So essentially, can anyone offer advice as to which company's might offer a loan to someone in my situation, or comapny's I should avoid. I found this on a web search and it looks terrible(http://www.loansforunemployed.co.uk/), but do I have any other alternative?

    Thanks For Your Time.
  • From your post, have you actually been refused the operation on the NHS? If so, the fact that your self-confidence is undermined you may be able to use that as a reason for the corrective surgery. If breast surgery (nothing against it) is available on the NHS to enhance self-confidence I'd have thought corrective sugery to the face should be included. Certainly you can get ears pinned back.

Debt is a slippery slope and though it may not seem so bad before you get into debt, I'd change a lot of choices now to avoid debt I allowed myself to get into the past. Thankfully we are now almost completely out of debt, apart from one loan and the mortgage. I know there are some things that debt cannot be avioded for, but do think hard about this. Politely push your GP for a referral.
  • Just seen this on MotelyFool, may be worth a look if you still need the loan:

What I don't understand here is how you will be able to repay ''it off as soon as possible without ever taking one out again,''?
Why not just save money now in order to afford the operation?
  • It's kind of personal and as I said, borrowing this money is the only real option available to me. The accident has left me with a disfigured nose which has caused me to defer a year from university; I've had a consultation and the doctor will definitely be able to fix the problem but I need the money first. I can't get a job at the moment because my self-esteem is at an all time low with my nose looking the way it is. So I'm looking to take a loan out have the operation, recover, get a part time job and go back to university. I'll be able to get a part time job for around £150 a week, it's just my situation at present is quite bleak.

Sorry but in the real world this does not happen.
If you are not happy for NHS to fix your nose then it will have to stay as it is.

Bear in mind that many good surgeons share their time between private practise and NHS. And don't leave their skills behind on the NHS days.

If the emotional trauma is as deep as your post indicates - the NHS will sort it, and generally do so quite quickly. Get a referral and be candid about the emotional scarring.

Had a very similar situation with my son, who had a relatively minor facial problem with excessive bone growth. It bothered him more than anyone realised - mainly because it was only noticeable, to others, in profile. But we had to act when we realised the distress it was causing him - and his Doctor referred him purely on the 'confidence' aspect.

Caused him to miss his first Uni year - and the op was far more significant (had to completely remove the forehead and machine excess bone growth away, front and back) than yours will be. But for a condition that was clearly less noticeable than is yours.

Moral - the NHS will resolve this without the cost you are considering. No knowledge, I realise, of what you have already done in that direction - but it is worth pressing your case through your GP, as it's putting your life on hold.

I can't understand this. My husband is recovering from a nose operation after breaking his nose playing rugby. Like yourself, he had no breathing difficulties at all, but it was terribly deformed at the bridge. He saw our GP about 20 days after the injury and he got him in to see an NHS consultant within 2 days. One week later he had the op. Explain to your GP how it is affecting you psychologically.

By the way, his nose looks even better than BEFORE he broke it and both of us give the NHS 10 out of 10.
Inside me there is a thin women screaming to get out.................so I shut the !!!!!! up with a biscuit.:D
