Hi chicacherrycola, I would second what Briona has said.

I believe it is fairly difficult to get work in the UK fresh out of CELTA/TESOL but I say that just to give you fair warning, not to dishearten you. I do know of a couple of people who have worked/work in the UK, one of whom had teaching experience overseas and the other didn't.

I did my CELTA in the UK, at a great school, and they did take on same graduates for summer school teaching. ESL is quite seasonal so depending on where you live it may not be a great time now to be looking for jobs. I finished my qualification in May (a few years ago) and that was when the schools were starting to hire for the summer season. That was in the South West, in a coastal town - if you are in London in particular then this won't apply as much.

What are you hoping to get out of it? Full time/part time? In my experience, you would most likely start out with part time hours, and possibly a short term contract. If you can manage to survive on part time hours then it's quite likely a job with full time hours will crop up sooner or later. When I first started I did study tours - part time - for a few weeks, then a vacancy opened up in the main school, so I went full time, and eventually was given a permanent contract. Just be aware that you might need to supplement your income at first.
  • Thanks for your replies.

I had thought it might be difficult to qualify then find a job (as with anything at the moment), I just dont want to be in the position I am now and have a shiny new certificate but no work (I suppose its the same thing of not having experience). I am in London but if there is more likely to be work in the summer I could wait until next spring.

    Lots to think about.

    xxx
