I am looking to move into a two bedroom terraced house in the coming weeks and am interested in installing a rainwater harvesting system.

Does anyone have an up to date cutting list?

From what I can see, I need a water butt, a pump, some method of filtration, speed rail and what else???

How much would I expect to save per month in a house of 2 adults and a newborn baby??

Where did you guys get the micron sock filter from to take out smaller particulates ??

    Cheers

I got my filter (5 micron one) from good ol eBay!

Let us know how you get on with your project, preferably uploading some photos. How will you be pumping your water? I'm still really happy with my booster pump. OK, it costs a bit more in electricity that a submersible pump, but I can live with the 12p it costs per cubic metre of water. I also picked up a cheap water meter from eBay. I find this great to see how much water I've used and thus, how much money I've saved too.

Will just be using the pump for watering/car cleaning. Looking to connect downstairs toilet as well.

Will get some pics up when i get round to doing it.

    Cheers

Quote...We found that we are on a high water table. To cut a long story short, all the family came to stay, tank emptied, and before it rained again, the sides of the tank collapsed...

It's not easy Being Green, did something similar, don't think that was caged.

Many of the tanks and systems sold in the UK for rainwater harvesting are only plastic and come from Germany. Some are even shipped in 2 halves to cut costs (they stack like eggboxes) and stuck together in the UK!

The UK has much higher groundwater than Germany and although the German ones are sold to be installed without concreting them in - fine for Germany - collapsed sides is exactly what can happen in the UK unless the tank is specifically designed for our high water tables.

UK manufactured tanks are traditionally made in tough fibreglass to withstand the UK's high water table. You want a tank that is made in one piece with no seams or seals. One UK system has a 30 year tank warranty (search google for "rainwater harvester 30 year warranty") so stick to those.

I was keen because I stayed with my brother out in Aus. ... To drink it they filter through a half micron filter. ... The filters are available here, I've fitted one to a single tap to stop my wife buying bottled water. We get scummy tea if we use straight tap water. Works a treat.

Fred - the filter you fitted for your wife sounds excellent. I've searched and can only find things for guttering, or an aquarium! Would you be willing to tell me where you got your filter from? What exactly it's called? Many thanks.
