I am at a bit of a loss and haven't got a clue which cholrine format to buy as just got given a 10ft pool. All replies gratefully accepted!

Should I get the liquid, granules or the tablets which I gather have to float in a little basket or something???

How much do you all tend to get through in a week? We put the pool up during the warm spell a few weeks ago, but had to drain it when the water went cloudy because we hadn't sterilised it.

Also read on different websites about just adding household bleach as it contains the same stuff. Is this right or just a load of rubbish?

Obviously looking at refilling the pool for school hols but reluctant to spend loads incase the weather is as rubbish as last year!
  • Invest in tester strips, pool cover, leaf skimmer, a cheap broom, clarifier, ph balancers and algecide. Look at starter kits to help with intial cost. If you are using tablets they should be enough so shouldnt need the granuals. Remember to change filter as our was manky after 1 month.

Costs do add up but the stuff tends to last. We have had a pool for 3 years now and still learning but much better!

Good luck my kids and half the street love ours

  • Depneds on you really as long as there is chlorine added and the pool checked regularly. I tend to check at least weekly but sometimes more depending on use. See OPs duplicate post where I have listed some basic essentials (well according to me that is!) http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1822035&highlight= .

The cost does add up but the goods tend to last. This deal will see me through 2 years minimum on a 12ft (May - Sept) and good stuff. Another tip Ive heard is if use use tablets to put a couple in the filter.

I check my levels every two days and hover the pool once a week, had a nightmare with it last year as if you dont have a filtter on at least for a few hours a day, stagnat water you will grow little bugs like mosquetos. Thats for a in ground pool thats tiled so not sure if its the same with the smaller ones, but when the heaters are on it does kill the clorine a lot faster and regards to clorine 5kg lasts me a month. I would only use household bleach to shock the pool to get rid of bugs or if you were going away for a few weeks to stop it going green.

We have a 12ft one and we buy a bottle of baby sterilising fluid and pour the whole thing in. You can get them in the supermarket and poundland for about £1 and usually come in a big blue bottle.
Last year our pool went green so quickly and was a total chore to empty, clean, refill etc and the pumps are pretty useless, but the fluid we're using this year has fixed that problem!
Usually put a new bottle in every 7 days or so.

Does this work against algae??? I use aquablanc and then shock it every few weeks although mostly during summer the last few years the cover has been on. I was glad of it though a few weeks ago. All the kids from school bought their cossies and towels around. Our water has always stayed clean though with the aquablanc and its chlorine free and so easy, just one sachet a week and the kids don't get sore eyes. We have a filter as well although only run it minimal.

This is for anyone that does not want to use chlorine

I dont really know the science of it, but its stopped the pool going green and slippery, and keeps the water nice and clear! so I guess it works against algae?
