There's also the half price hut above Waverley station, on the first weekend of the Fringe there's lots of 2-4-1 offers (see main Fringe website) and there's always the chance of just walking down the street and having people trying to drag you into their show

Miles Jupp is hosting a free show daily in association with the Guardian, more details using the above link.

    First show is 10 August
  • Last year the Scotsman had vouchers for free tickets at the beginning of the festival - you just took the voucher to the box office and exchanged it for tickets from a list of shows. However the 'free' allocation was often just 2 or 4 tickets per show for the popular shows and it's first come first served. Still got to see Tim Minchin for free and something at the Pleasance - can't remember what! They usually do the Assembly on one day and the Pleasance on another. If you hang out at the Pleasance courtyard in the opening days you often get offered free tickets.

Also the previews are usually cheaper (£5) and the first Sunday and Monday is 2 for 1 tickets on many shows. After that there's the half price hut above the station or newspaper 2 for 1 vouchers (Scotsman, The List, Evening News).

If you are still heading to the Fringe then get yourslef along to the royal mile where from 10am onwards there are several stages for street performers and other Fringe acts trying to plug their show for free, you will normally get a 10 minute sample of some of the shows around town.

Last year we went to the Royal Mile on the middle Saturday.
We were thinking of coming mid week this week.
Is the street entertainment on every day?
    Thanks

Yes, there are people on the stages every day on the Royal Mile + street performers and buskers scattered about (also on Princes Street next to Burger King, in the gardens and on the mound). During the evenings things quieten down but there are still street performers and buskers around until 9 or 10 ish.

Coming midweek is a good idea - this past weekend was very busy with long queues for the box office, for bars, toilets, etc restaurants and pubs very busy too and lots of the popular shows sold out but last night (Sunday) was much quieter.

By the way - today is the last day for 2 for 1 tickets on most shows, half price hut opens on the mound tommorrow but that's limited to the shows which aren't selling well so less choice and some (not all of them!) maybe not that good.
