Leapster or leappad plus writing

Hi
I'd like to purchase one of these for my 4 year olds birthday. Not sure what one to go for. Anyone help?
Thanks

My little one is 5 now and we have had the standard Leapad for a few years and he still plays with it. When he was about 3 he played the games from the stories mostly, now he can read the stories as well and still likes it.

We got a Leapster in the sales from Tesco and he loves that too. The games are good but can be expensive.

That probably wasn't a lot of help!

When I posted a note about the Leapster, everyone seemed to be pointing me to the V-Tech Smile Pocket. Cheapest is £60 in Toys R Us I think, but somes of the games are half price in Woolworths (£8 or so). I managed to get a half price deal on mine in Boots, and I'm sure Tescos and Asda were cheaper too. I'm waiting to give it to my little girl in May.

I'm sure there's some MSE'rs out there who know of a cheaper place to get it.

Edit - Sorry - I have just re-read this post and I don't think I've been much help either.....Sorry!!!!! xx I would say go for something as portable as possible. I think the writing system is bigger that the Leapster and its much easier to take out and about in the car or whatever. x

my little girl has had a leappad (not the writing one) for a while and goes through stages of using it. A friend has just bought one for her little boy and he is totally obsessed by it - good sign I would say.

I bought my DDs a leapster to share just after christmas - which has temporarily been misplaced. Again they loved it. DD1 is 4 1/2 and DD2 3.

I think the 2 of them do different things... the leappad is great for reading but mine love the leapster more - but whether this is more to do with the fact that it is newest I don't know.

    Good luck with your choice.

BTW are there any offers on for the Leapster at the moment anywhere? A friend wants one for her little girl.

    Thank you.

Woolworths are selling the leappad plus writing starter pack for £24.19 online (+ about £5 p&p) - it includes the storage system, headphones and 3 books. Fantastic bargain - ordered one at the weekend and it turned up today. Not available at this price in my local woolies, but maybe elsewhere.
Go through a cashback site like Quidco and you'll get 2 or 3% cashback!

    IMHO Wouldn't bother with either.
DS#1 and DS#2 both draw on scrap paper and 'read' the newspaper and trace over the words on the newspaper.

we have the leapad (normal one aged 3-5 yrs ) and my son almost 4 loves it ! but i know friends whos kids have them and they arent all that bothered with it !

guess it depends on the individual child

maybe try buying 2nd hand on ebay or somewhere then if your child doesnt like it you havent wasted too much money and can just resell on ebay again :)

sainsburys are doing the Leappad Writing Plus for £10. my local store have sold out, but you might be lucky at your local one

i managed to get some of the games for £3 each and the carry case was reduced to £4. just need to try and find a store that has the actual console in it now. but as i got the accessories cheap, i might be prepared to pay rrp for the unit, however i live in hope that it comes back into stock at sainsburys. still got 3 wks til dds bday, so ive got time

ooh ive just noticed that woolworths have it online for £24.99, but again its out of stock. However, they do tend to get things back in stock quicker than sainsburys

not really much help as it seems to be oos most places, but one of them must get some in stock soon??
