Whoever said that nothing in this world is free obviously hasn't sampled the many downloadable "freeware" games for Microsoft Windows that are available in cyberspace.
"Freeware" refers to full, unrestricted products that do not require any payment by the user, as opposed to the many try-before-you-buy "shareware" programs that are limited in either features, number of games, or length of play.
With so many free Windows games to choose from, it can be difficult to know what's worth your time. After lots of sampling, we've come up with five top-notch downloadable freebies that range from fantasy role-playing games (RPG) to card game diversions.
Solitare games
Sure, Windows XP ships with a few free card games, but you can download plenty more classic solitaire time-wasters without spending a dime. There are several free solitaire games on Windows Marketplace. Many of these games include rules and objectives (if needed), customizable backgrounds and deck styles, fun sound effects, and a smooth mouse-based interface for easy navigation between and during games.
America's Army: Special Forces
Climb up the ranks to earn the coveted Green Beret status in this authentic military action game, which is played solo or with others online. The goal of the game is to provide a realistic account of life in the U.S. Army. Gamers are challenged to pass individual and collective training missions, and are then dropped into simulated anti-terrorist scenarios around the globe. Special Forces includes its predecessor—2002's America's Army: Operations—but the newer version lets multiplayer fans take on specific roles, including Weapons Specialist, Intelligence, Engineer, Communications, and Combat Medic. Be all that you can be with this high-quality "Teen"-rated freebie.
Tip: This game is very graphics-intensive and may take up to an hour to download, even with a high-speed connection. If you have a dial-up connection to the Internet, the download may take several hours.
Dink Smallwood
This fantasy role-playing game (RPG) is a worthy adventure that allows you to use the keyboard or a joystick to control a teenage farmer who explores numerous locations, battles foes with might and magic, and takes on multiple quests from allied characters. The game can take a good 15 to 20 hours to finish, but you can save your game and return where you left off at any time. And when you're done, you can experiment with the bundled "DinkEdit" tool to create your own adventures. The game also supports hundreds of downloadable modifications ("mods") to extend your quests even further.
Arcade Classics
Gamers old enough to hum a few bars of "Pac-Man Fever" should enjoy this collection of retro arcade games from the late 1970s and early 1980s. You can select from one of six remakes—Asteroids, Tetris, Pac-Man, Pong, Snake, and Space Invaders. Each game comes with the authentic sights, sounds, and gameplay that made the original arcade versions into classics. Best of all, no quarters are required. The latest version of the Arcade Classic Arcade Pack even includes an option to have your high scores posted online for others to see
