Want a whole salmon

I want to buy a whole salmon for a family get together next week.

Just been to Tescos and they will order one for £6.99 a kilo. I think I need a 3 to 4 kilo one, ouch !

Does anybody know a cheaper source, maybe another supermarket with a special offer, please ?

Has the Tesco half price offer finished then?

They were still £3.49 a kilo on Saturday.

(Or has your Tesco not got a fish counter???)

Can't get anything else in our freezer now....so many salmon fillets in there - have bought two whole salmon in the last 3 weeks. We do eat rather a lot of it though!! Hot smoked using birch on the barbeque is my favourite..mmmmmmmmmmm

A 3-4kg salmon will feed 10 at least. I get around 16-18 fillets off a whole fish that size, at least the same size as the ones they charge you £2 each for....and the rest doesn't get wasted - the trimmings get a quick smoking on the barbie!

Do you have a local fishmonger? I find buying fish locally much better and cheaper than any supermarket.

I've just got back from Tesco where I checked the price - definitely 6.99 a kilo, so no half price deals sadly.
  • Morrisons had salmon on half price - not sure of it still is....

according to this thread it should still be on offer -

not sure if you have a costco near you but they sell huge salmon for around £8, if you know of anyone with a card.

As already mentioned ditch the supers for fish. if at all possible go to a traditional fish mongers we get whole salmon for less than a tenner then as we are walking round Tesco can't resist going past the fish counter for a bit of a giggle at their prices

do you have local fish delivery? I checked the Yellow pages the other time and they called over and sold me a super large one for just £5. This was the end of the day and was getting rid of their catch for the day. It was such a large fish it had to be cut up into several portions so that I could keep it in the fridge and freezer. It was the freshest fish I've tasted.
  • I'd definately reccomend a local fishmonger over the supermarkets any day. I find they tend to care more about their produce and are more knowledgeable.
